I wish to study Management as I would like to enter a business related career. I have
applied for this course as I believe this is where I have a vocation and where I can use
my academic and personal skills best. I can see myself in a ³hands on´ role within a
business environment five years from now.My interest in pursuing business as a
career first started when I shadowed my uncle who has his own business working as a
mechanical engineer. From spending time on site with him over many summers I had
firsthand experience of people and operations management. I learnt in-depth on how
his business operates.

Studying Business has increased my knowledge of this academic area and awakened
in me the thirst to study more. The areas which I found most enjoyable were Finance
in Business, Marketing and Operations Management. I enjoyed the finance aspect of
this course because it helped me understand how different businesses use universal
calculations such as measuring profit (net and gross), break even, using budgets and
understanding why ³cash flow is king´. The Marketing side of business was
entertaining as well as challenging as I learnt how firms promote products to the
market using the Boston Matrix and differentiate its products by giving it a Unique
Selling Point. I am also currently studying Media which relates to this aspect of
business marketing as I understand how the general media works positively and
negatively. This has deepened my knowledge as it allowed me to explore the way
firms use copyright restrictions and patents as part of promoting a new product into
the market and how firms monitor a products value through the product life cycle.

Furthermore, much of what I have learnt I have been able to incorporate into my
everyday life. For example when looking at TV adverts I am able to read behind the
message and understand their target audience and USP. I regularly follow the news
and read broadsheet newspapers often such as µThe Times¶ and µThe Financial
Times¶. I am currently reading ³Freakonomics´ written by Steven D. Levitt and
Stephen J. Dubner. I enjoy reading this as it gives an insight into a different
characteristic of Economics.According to the book, economics is really the study of
incentives, and so using this kind of angle, the book comes up with answers to why
things work the way they do.

During the summer holidays I worked as a part time cashier in a small retail business
where I have had the chance to experience how a small business is run. I have been
able to witness for myself what the effect of the credit crunch is having on small
businesses. I found this experience very valuable to me and I am now using
knowledge from this bank of experiences to implement strategies as the Assistant
Managing Director of The Young Enterprise Project currently running in my college.
I am at the forefront of this project and I was very happy to be voted their Assistant
Managing Director. I am currently negotiating and developing a product as part of the
team. I can use this opportunity to improve my people skills and to work with others
and build on my social skills in this management role.

My interest outside of college is football and going out with friends. I participate in
different sports activities such as table tennis, chess and basketball. I enjoy being
partof a team and I find that exercise keeps me fit and able to cope with the pressures
of study and everyday life.

I hope you will look favourably upon my application to study Economics and
Business and I assure you that I will be highly motivated and an absolutely committed
student.
