WHAT TO DO:
A. Get a clean sheet of bond paper (any size) and fold
it into three equal parts. Make a table with 6 rows and 3
columns and Do the following exercise.
Identify if the statements in the first column are a trend
or a fad then write your prediction.

1. More kids love playing with loombands.
2. Yaya Dub (Maine Mendoza) used dubsmash and
got so popular overnight. Dubsmash vis a mobile
app that creates short selfie videos dubbed with
famous sounds.
3. High fructose corn syrup is present in fruits juices,
cakes, ice cream, sweets, and chocolates, and was
found to be the culprit for obesity and diabetes.
4. More and more youth today are fond of using high-
tech gadgets like tablets and smartphones.
5. More people around the globe are playing the
mobile app Pokémon Go.
DIFFERENTIATED TASKS:
A. Remember a simple wheeled toy/ dump truck
that you played when you we’re young. Identify
and list as many parts of the toy as you can.
Pick a part of the toy that seems most
interesting to you and then answer these
questions about the part:
1. What does this part help the toy do?
2. If this part were removed, would the toy still
work?
3. Is this part made of even smaller parts?
B. Find an item in your house that is not made of
parts. Describe that item and answer this
question:
Are there more things in the house that are made of
parts or more things that are not made of parts?

The Connections between Fads and Trends
Why Are Parts Important?
Think about all the things that are around you right
now, this instance. All of those are made up of parts,
sometimes a few, and sometimes many, many parts. If the
parts were put together in a different way, something
different would result. Just like changing one item in a
recipe and you change the taste of the meal, right? So
within objects and ideas there exists special relationship
between the parts and the whole that makes the whole
object what it is, that permits it to function the way it does.
The Evolution of Fads to Trends
Both fads and trends are products of people’s
reaction to events. The nature of fads and trends can both
be tangible and non-tangible. Tangible fads and trends are
those that can be felt by the five senses. Meanwhile,
intangible fads and trends are those that cannot be felt by
the five senses but form part of the behavior and attitude of
the people.
Despite fads being temporary, some fads last
longer than others, and can even help determine a trend.
An example of this is the “low carb” fad, which gradually
brought in the trend of choosing healthier carbohydrates,
leading to the trend of whole grain, and for rice, the brown/
red organic strains.
Fads are helpful in that way – in that they are
indicators of what consumers want to do, achieve, and/or
experience and these discoveries lead to the identification
of consistent and lasting trends.

WHAT TO DO:
C. Think of a trending (song, dress, shoes, dance,
etc). Choose one trending item and present it
by means of a video presentation.

Causes and Consequences
What’s the Connection between Causes and
Consequences?
There are two essential variables in this phenomenon:
one is “cause” or “consequences”. Causes are active. They
bring forth effects. However, as rightly stated Alexander
Spirkin, “after this” does not always mean “because of
this”.
The connection between cause and effect takes place in
time. However, there are different views as to the co-
existence between the two.
One view states that the cause always precedes the effect.
After some time, the effect appears. The cause and effect
will then co-exist for a period, until the cause dies out and
becomes the cause of something else. Meanwhile, another
view states that the cause and effect are always
simultaneous. It is not all the time that effects and
consequences can be seen after activating the cause.
What is the Connection of Fads and trends to Causes
and Consequences?
“There is no such thing as “it just happened”.
Having foresight or being able to anticipate events, in
addition to having hindsight and knowing the background
and all available details, will lead to more informed
decisions and decisive actions. These skills are critical in
predicting trends and patterns.
D. Write a short poem. You may choose from any
of these two titles: “Play with fads, work with
trends.” or There is no such thing as “it just
happened”.
E. . Fill up the Circle of Trend:
1. On the upper right hand corner, write one
emerging trend.
2. On the lower right hand corner, write the things
about that trend.
3. On the left hand corner, write the things that
can be done for that trend.
4. On the upper left hand corner, write the
concrete thing that you can actually do to that
trend.
F. Performance Task
Advertising-Hunting
Nowadays, the average person encounters more
than a hundred advertisements a day, be it in the form of
TV and radio commercials, billboards, online promotions,
and print ads, among many others.
From all the advertisements that you encounter,
which one caught your attention? Why? Looking at the root
of it, what was the underlying cause of the promotion?
What does it target? Whom does it target? How does it
convey its message to target clientele? Lastly, is the
promoted product a trend or a fad?
Taking into account the questions, write a one page
essay about this.
GENERALIZATION:
Answer the following questions:
1. Can a trend become a fad? Can a fad become a
trend? Why do you think so? Justify your answers
by giving examples.
2. Can you think of a fad that can eventually become
a trend? How can this fad become a trend in the
future?
