Connecting to the course content

So far in the course, we have been thinking about bodies and embodiment among the living. From this
point forward, we will shift our attention to the past! We will explore some of the same concepts but
look at them from a new angle. This week, we are examining how embodiment manifests in material
culture (artifacts worn on the body or artifacts depicting the body) and in human skeletal remains.

Step 1: I advise completing the readings first. It will be easier to response to the questions below if you
have reviewed the theory and concepts for this week.

Step2: Watch the two short videos posted in OWL as part of this discussion activity (<20 minutes total).
Consider the “THINK” prompts as you watch. You do not have to answer the prompts, but your
reflection should inform your answers in the final step.

Step 3: Respond to the following questions:

 Question 1: What aspects of social identity are revealed by interpreting the Maya figurine
depicted in the video, and what are the limitations of this interpretation? (Aim for ~100 words in
your response but it is okay to go over).

 Question 2: What steps could bioarchaeologists take to build on the traditional method of
recording disease in ancient skeletons in order to share a deeper understanding of lived
experiences of illness in the past? (Aim for ~100 words in your response but it is okay to go
over).
