Software upgrade instruction

This document describes the firmware upgrade of a C-MAC PM, 8403XD

1 Upgrade instruction
1.1 Required equipment for upgrading the C-MAC PM
 8403XD C-MAC PM (device to be updated)
 8403XDA Rechargeable lithium battery for C-MAC PM
 8403XDP Connecting cable
 Latest software release 747VXXX according valid release notes of KARL STORZ
 Compatible C-MAC camera device (e.g. 8403HX Videolaryngoscope)
 PC with USB port
Minimum system requirements
o Operating system: Windows 7 or higher
o USB port: USB 2.0 HighSpeed (480 Mbps)
Attention
The safety hints and instructions of the KARL STORZ In-
struction manual must be known and followed any time.
Note that the latest by KARL STORZ released software ver-
sion is allowed be installed on the device only.

2 Upgrade procedure
2.1 Preparation

2.1.1 Remove the battery of the C-MAC PM. Then connect the C-MAC PM to the PC.

Note, the C-MAC PM is powered by the comput-

er. As such, the battery must be always be re-
moved from the C-MAC PM when it is connected
to a computer. If you do not remove the battery,
the message ‘creating storage’ can be displayed
on the PM.

If that is the case you have to wait for approx. 10 minutes. Then the message will disappear.
To install a new software release on the C-MAC PM connect the Pocket Monitor via the USB
cable 8403XDP with the computer.

Note
If the message ‘Check and repair (recommended)’ appears,
then this process should be initiated.
Always follow the instructions shown on the PC.
2.1.2 Unzip the C-MAC PM software

Copy the files of the latest software release for the C-MAC PM to your computer. The soft-
ware will be provided as zip file (747vXXX_update.zip). The unpacked file will create a folder
named ‘update’ on your computer.

Attention
Make sure that your installed anti-virus system on your com-
puter allows an access of C-MAC PM as an external system.
Otherwise interrupt anti-virus scan of C-MAC PM.

2.2 Upgrade of the C-MAC PM

Attention
Never interrupt an upgrade process or disconnect the device
from the PC while the files are copied.
Make sure the folder ‘update’ is copied to the root of the C-
MAC PM not in a sub directory.

As soon as the C-MAC PM and the PC is connection is built up, the C-MAC PM boots up. Af-
ter a few seconds the automatic play will be opened. Choose the option open folder to dis-
play files.
If the automatic play does not appear, open the explorer and choose the drive named C-
MAC PM.

Content of the folder named ‘update’.

To upgrade the C-MAC PM, copy the folder named ‘update’ by drag and drop to the root of
the C-MAC PM (do not copy the ‘update’ folder in a subdirectory).

This process will last about 5

minutes. After update process the folder ‘update’ will disappear from the root of C-MAC PM.

If the copying is completed, open the Windows Explorer, click to the drive with the right
mouse key and choose ‘eject’.

Note
Choose the ‘eject‘ function in the Windows Explorer by a click
on the right mouse button. If you eject the device on the
symbol on the task list, the update process does not start
with all windows installations.

After rejecting the drive, the upgrade process of the C-MAC PM will be started. The progress
of the upgrade will be displayed on the screen of the C-MAC PM. This process will last about
3 minutes.

As soon as the update process is completed, the C-MAC PM displays the message ‚please
unplug cable‘.

Disconnect the C-MAC PM from the PC.

2.3 Verification and function test

Install the battery of the C-MAC PM, connect the updated C-MAC PM to a C-MAC camera
(e.g. 8403HX Video laryngoscope) and start the C-MAC PM by folding up the display.
The installed software version must be displayed in the blue bar on top of the display. (Note
that the bar with version and storage information is displayed for a few seconds only when
the unit is turned on.)

If the verification failed and the C-MAC Pocket Monitor does not display the correct software
version, repeat the procedure from step 2.2.
