Take a look at these pictures. Try to guess what is happening in the pictures.

Motivation:
A while ago pictures were flash on the screen. In relation to that the students will
answer the following questions:

After that they should answer the following questions:


What did you see on the screen?
What do you think these persons are doing in each picture?
How do you think these people use language?
What do you think will happen if the proper use of language is not utilized?
Statement of Learning Outcomes:
This week’s lesson will be all about answering the question “why do we
communicate?” It is important to know why do we communicate so we could utilized it
appropriately and achieve excellent results in all interactions.

1. Watching Activities
The students will watch various speaking activities and will answer the following
questions:
Who was the speaker in the video?
What was the topic all about?
What is the purpose of the speaker?
How did you identify the purpose of the speaker?

3. Group Work
The students will be grouped by five members. Each of the group will be given guide
question before viewing a local talk show.

Guide Questions
1. Are you familiar with those people you have seen in the talk show?
2. Who are those people?
3. As the talk show continues, what verbal and non-verbal cues did those people use?
4. How were those cues used?
5. Did it help them to carry out their messages effectively?

4. Reporting
The students will report their work.

5. Reading Activities
The students will be given various speech manuscripts delivered by prominent people.
They should be able to identify the function of communication in each selection.
1. Inaugural Address delivered by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in March 4, 1933.
2. Quit India by Mahatma Gandhi in August 8, 1942.
3. Speech Addressed to the Filipino Youth by President Jose P. Laurel in February 29,
1944.

B. Think of two television commercials. Describe the emotion expressed by the


people who appeared in the said commercials. Explain how communication
enabled them to express their emotions.

In preparation for the next topic, Students will research on Types of speech
context and speech styles.
