Instructions
i. Answer ALL questions
ii. Write you name in every page of your answer sheet.

1. Use a scientific calculator to solve the following:

a)
√3 (0.3854)(12.48)2 , correct to seven significant figures.
( 0.04382 )4 ( √5 631.7)

elog 3 + √ log √ 5 , correct to 6 decimal places.

b)
√ ln 23

c) Use logarithms to evaluate; √3 e 2 √ ln 3−cos 300 °

2. a) Prove that cosh ( x− y )=coshxcoshy−sinhxsinhy

b) Solve 2 cosh 2 x+ 10 sinh2 x=5

1+ √ 1−x 2
c) Show that sech−1 x=ln [ x ]( for every 0< x ≤1)

3. A farmer has 20 hectares for growing barley and swedes. The farmer has to decide how much
of each to grow. The cost per hectare for barley is ₤30 and for swedes is ₤20. The farmer has
budgeted ₤480. Barley requires 1 man-day per hectare and swedes require 2 man-days per
hectare. There are 36 man-days available. The profit on barley is ₤100 per hectare and on
swedes is ₤120 per hectare. Find the number of hectares of each crop the farmer should saw
to maximize profits.

4. The following table shows the number of students at Aldersgate Secondary school according
to their heights:

Height (cm) No. of Students

60 – 62 5
63 – 65 18
66 – 68 42
69 – 71 27
72 – 74 8
75 – 77 12
78 - 80 16
By using the above data, find:
a. The mean
b. Semi-interquartile range

5. a) A group of students consists of 17 girls and 15 boys. 22 of them play handball while
16play basketball. Among boys, 12 play handball, 11 play basketball and 10 play both
games. Among the girls, 3 do not play either of the games.
i. Summarize the given information using Venn Diagrams.
ii. How many students play either handball or basketball?
iii. How many girls play both games?
b) Simplify the following by using the laws:
i. [( A ∩ B' )∪( A ∩C' )] ∩ A '
ii. A ' ∩( B ∪ A)

roots are p2 , q2 ,r 2
b) Find the set of real values of x from which |3−2 x|<|4+ x|

7. a) Find the equation of the circle with Centre (3, -2) and tangent to the line
L: 3 x+ 4 y +3=0.
b) Find the Centre and radius of each of the circles A and B whose equations are
x 2+ y 2−16 y +32=0 and x 2+ y 2−18 x+2 y +32=0.

8. a) Integrate ∫
√ 9−x 2
x2

b) Calculate
i. the area under the curve y=x 2 +2 between x=1 and x=4

ii. ∫ sin 4 x dx
c) Evaluate ∫ tan6 x sec4 x dx

Where A is a none-zero constant, is given by x n+1=(2− A x n )x n

Taking A=0.143∧x 1=7 use the formula to calculate x 2and x 3 correct to four
significant figures.
b) The following is a table of cos √ x

x 0.00 0.25 0.5 0.75 1.00

cos √ x 1.0000 0.8780 0.7604 0.6481 0.5402
