INTRODUCTION RESULTS
Adhesive wear is a significant material loss 1. Nanoindentation Test
mechanism that leads to wide scale surface
degradation of functional components especially
in engineering industries. This project focuses
on improving the tribological properties of
surfaces subjected to adhesive wear using
Titanium Nitride and Titanium Carbide ceramic
coatings.

OBJECTIVE
Experimentally study the effect of ceramic
coatings on performance enhancement of EN 31
2. Nanoscratch Test
steel as compared to uncoated and heat treated
substrate by studying the properties such as
friction coefficient, surface hardness, roughness,
microstructure and strength of coating as per
ASTM standards.
METHODOLOGY
EN31 steel specimens were laser cut to 20mm x
20mm x 6mm from 100mm x 100mm x 6mm.
Holes of 4mm diameter were drilled in the laser
cut specimen to hang in the vacuum PVD coating 3.SEM Analysis
chamber. These samples were heat treated and
polished.
Heat Treatment
The heat treatment was done in muffle furnace of
3.5kW rating, 230V input and 1.6A current. The
specimen was heated and maintained at 8000C for
20 minutes until red hot. Then they were
quenched in cold water of temperature 130C for 2 4. 3D Confocal Microscopy 5. Metallography
minutes. These samples were then polished using
alumina paste on velvet cloth in grinder-polisher.

Polishing
For polishing, the samples were rubbed on
sandpaper of grit sizes 0, 200, 400, 600 microns.
These were then polished using alumina paste and
velvet cloth in Single Disc grinder polisher.
Ion plating
TiN and TiC coatings deposited by cathodic-arc
ion plating technique.
CONCLUSION
• Nanohardness test results showed that
TiN has the highest hardness (2.39GPa)
compared to EN 31 steel (1.52GPa),
6. EDX Analysis heat treated steel (1.86GPa), and TiC
coating (0.58GPa).
• Progressive load nano scratch test
results indicated that critical load is
highest for TiN coating (241mN)
compared to that of EN 31 steel
TiN coating TiC coating (206mN), heat treated steel (193mN),
and TiC coating (70mN).
EXPERIMENTATION • The roughness parameters obtained
from 3D confocal test were least for
