CTS 8 Assignment
Purpose for this assignment:
1. To create a typed report to demonstrate your newly acquired Word 2007
word processing skills;
2. To teach yourself something new about some piece of technology;
3. To put your new learning into practice by testing what you just learned.

Your written report must answer these questions and you must use Word
2007 to create this report:
1. What your project is all about. (This could be your introduction.)
2. What did you DO in the past weeks(Blog)  be detailed and specific.
3. What did you LEARN (knowledge and skills and other).
4. What FINAL PRODUCT do you have to display to the class?

Tasks: Choose ONE of these three projects (once you make your choice
you MUST stick with it as there is not time for you to start over!)

PROJECT A:
To become a ‘picture editor and director’ by learning tips and characteristics of
how to take ‘a great picture’ and then putting your theory into practice.

PROJECT B:
To become an expert with ‘advanced scanning skills’ by using GCA scanners to
scan and reassembly oversized posters and then putting your theory into
practice.

PROJECT C:
To gain knowledge in another area of technology that piques your interest and
curiosity by proposing a detailed project to Mr. Schellenberg for approval prior to
beginning. This project you must learn something (theory) and then test that
theory (practical).

PROJECT A: (worth 28 marks)
To become a ‘picture editor and director’ by learning tips and characteristics of
how to take ‘a great picture’ and then putting your theory into practice.

BACKGROUND to this project:

Even if you just take snapshot pictures for fun, wouldn’t you still want to become better at taking pictures?
Wouldn’t you like to take some time to learn more about your camera’s settings? Wouldn’t you want to know ‘what
to look for when composing your images’? This project will hopefully provide some guidance and permit you to
seek answers to these and many more questions.

Section#1: Learning the theory

You must visit each of the following three websites and teach yourself the characteristics of a great photograph.

Website #1: Top 10 tips for taking great pictures

http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=317&pq-locale=en_US&_requestid=4073

Your report must include a bulleted list of each of these 10 tips and a very brief explanation of each tip so that
any person who views your list can immediately understand your notes.

Website #2: How to Fix Common Mistakes

http://www.photosecrets.com/tips.5mistakes.html

Your report must include a bulleted list of each of these 5 mistakes and the tips to correct them. Also a very brief
explanation of each characteristic so that any person who views your list can immediately understand your notes.

Website #3: Interactive demos

http://www.photonhead.com/exposure/simcam.php
http://www.camerasinteractive.com/index.php#

This is cool stuff! Now that you have learned tips and characteristics of taking great pictures, try out what you just
learned. Use these online, interactive camera simulators to practice improving your picture taking!

Your report must include a very short paragraph about your reaction(s) to using this simulator.

Ensure that you try out each of these scenarios:

Use a plain background
Move it from the middle
Lock the focus
Know your flash’s range
Watch the light

Section#2: Putting the theory into practice
Now it’s your turn to try your hand at using the tips and characteristics of good photograph. You need to
take 16 digital pictures, but before you wildly just ‘click away’, you need to have this thought running through your
brain: when each of these 16 pictures is viewed by others, do they generate curiosity, interest and
discussion?
First you must decide on a THEME that encompasses all your images. Second, discuss your theme with
Mr. S. to ensure that you have enough of a topic to be able to take 16 related pictures. Third, once you have the
‘go ahead’, plan your picture taking using Inspiration to diagram your entire project.

You need 4 pictures for each of these types of shot:

1. Extreme close-up (5 inches away)
2. Close-up (12 inches away)
3. Medium shot (a ‘nice’ distance with subject and background both quite obvious)
4. Long shot (maximum zoom used so subject is way in the distance)

For the four images for each type of shot, you need to experiment with the
characteristics & tips you just learned:
Rule of thirds (two pictures where rule of thirds NOT done and two following the rule);
Each of the four needs to be taken from different and unusual angles (one could be straight on and you
decide on the other three angles. SUGGESTIONS: go HIGH such as climb up on the divisions 1 & 2
playgrounds and take pictures from up high and go LOW. Yes, lie flat on your stomach and click away.)
Two vertical and two horizontal orientations;
One of each of any example of ‘bad’, ‘good’, ‘better’ and ‘best’ backgrounds;
Two shots in natural lighting (go outside) and two using artificial lighting (in classroom);
Two pictures of a person or people and two of scenery/landscapes;

NOTE #1: Do NOT annoy people; there is nothing worse than having a camera in your face especially only 12
inches away. If you plan to use it in class, you MUST have first asked that teacher. Do arrange how your subjects
should stand, ‘props’ they could wear, etc. providing they are agreeing to help you. You are the director  so set
the stage and click away.
NOTE #2: Journal about each picture such as temperature, weather, difficulties, challenges you had when
composing your image so that you will have more to include in your report.

Section#3: Creating your written report (you must start Sept. 22 or 23)
A. Your written report must answer these questions and you must use Word 2007 to create this
report:
1. What your project is all about. (This could be your introduction.)
2. What did you DO in the past weeks(Blog)  be detailed and specific.
3. What did you LEARN (knowledge and skills and other).
4. What FINAL PRODUCT do you have to display to the class?

B. There are tons of ways to display your 16 pictures in your report. Use your imagination. You could group
by category, by composition type, etc…’ Remember that ALL pictures must be cropped & compressed
then add ‘flair’.
C. Your report was informative and ‘taught’ the reader the subject
D. Cover page
E. Header
F. Footer
G. subtitles
H. Conventions (spelling, grammar usage, punctuation, paragraphing)
I. Completed on time
J. Teacher observations of daily individual effort
K. Final product presentation  the reader actually wanted to read it so add enhancements to make your
document as attractive and pleasing as possible.
L. Print final copy in black and white.
M. Save your final product on the S drive  CTS folder  ‘first_lastname_word2007.docx’

PROJECT B: (worth 28 marks)

To become an expert with ‘advanced scanning skills’ by using GCA scanners to scan and reassembly oversized
posters and then putting your theory into practice.

BACKGROUND to this project:

Scanners are useful pieces of hardware. Do you know how to use one to scan varying sizes of objects? Have you
ever questioned doing such a task? Perhaps these and other questions about using scanners intrigue you.

Section#1: Learning the theory AND putting it into practice

You will create a report that details how to scan varying sizes of documents. You need to scan and create CLEAN
COPIES which means removing all excess margins, etc.:
4 photos
2 Textbook pages from a book that is tough to remain open
2 textbook covers
2 worksheet assignments (any class)
And 4 oversized posters.
First you must decide on a THEME that encompasses all your images. Second, discuss your theme with Mr. S. to
ensure that you have enough of a topic to be able to scan all required images. Third, once you have the ‘go
ahead’, plan your project using Inspiration to diagram your entire project.

NOTE: For oversized posters

Browse through GCA’s poster stacks in the MRC and choose 4 oversized posters. Each poster needs to support
a ‘theme’ so that when you put all posters side by side, they tell a story. Research the history behind this theme
(example: poverty, 30’s, water, animals, food, space, etc.)

Scan each poster using one of GCA’s scanners. By the time you scan the third poster, you’ll be an expert! Using
Paint or another software ‘rebuild’ each poster. In your report, include a detailed ‘How to’ procedure with tips and
techniques on how to scan ALL these sized documents, and how to reassemble the posters and how to ‘clean up’
scanned images.

In your written report include a description of your theme and how the chosen posters and books support that
theme. As well, show individual scanned ‘poster pieces’ of each oversized poster and the final reassembled
poster picture.
Section#2: Creating your written report (you must start Sept. 22 or 23)
A. Your written report must answer these questions and you must use Word 2007 to create this
report:
