FROM FATHER RICH

For the last few months I have been participating in Advanced Pastoral Lead-
ership program with some other pastors in our Archdiocese which will last until
June 2011. I never thought that I will have to go back to school again, especially
that I know that I won’t get any smarter. I want to share with you what I
learned before I forget. The last session’s topic was “The Gifts of God for the Peo-
ple of God” and it emphasized the importance of lay people in the life of the
church especially, that the number of the priests is decreasing. Between 1965
and 20007 US Catholic population increased 48% and the number of priests
available for active pastoral ministry declined 8.5%. Between 2004 and 2020 according to Dean
Hoge “Priesthood in Year 2020” the estimated number of Catholics per parish will increase from
3086 to 3700.
• In 2007, 1/3 of newly ordained were foreign born
• Between 1985 and 2010
Number of parishes declined from 19,244 to 17,058
Number of Catholics grew from 53 to 65+ million
• Today there are nearly 17,000 deacons in the US and 31,000 Lay Ecclesial Ministers.
• 30%of parish priests say they are too busy to adequately meet pastoral needs of the people.
According to a National Opinion Research Center Survey:
• 87% of priests say they are very happy and satisfied with their lives
• 86% of US Catholics report that their pastors are doing a good job
• 73% of US Catholics are optimistic about the Church’s future
Another good news about the church is the beatification of the Holy Father John Paul II.

Amidst a cheering crowd during the Angelus, the Pope Benedict

XVI spoke about the coming beatification of John Paul II to be held
on May 1. “On 1 May I will have the joy of proclaiming the Venerable Pope
John Paul II, my predecessor, as a blessed. The date chosen is very significant
because it will, in fact, be the second Sunday of Easter which he himself dedi-
cated to Divine Mercy and on the eve of which his earthly life came to an end.”
Benedict XVI said that this beatification is a source of personal joy to him
and to all those who knew John Paul II ; “Those who knew him, those who re-
spected and loved him cannot but share in the Church's joy at this event.”
The beatification of John Paul II will be a historic event, in the last ten
centuries no pope has beatified his predecessor. Throughout history 78 popes have been named
saints and only 10 are blessed. It's estimated that some two million pilgrims will converge on Rome
for the ceremony.
Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi assured an invitation is not required to attend the
ceremony. Everyone traveling to Rome is welcome.
Preparations are already underway in the chapel of St. Peter's Basilica that will host the body
of John Paul II before May 1.
Vatican workers are preparing the chapel of Saint Sebastian, which until now has housed
the remains of the pope from 1689, Innocent XI.
During the ceremony on May 1, we will also find out what day will be assigned to the liturgical
feast of the future Blessed John Paul II.
God Bless, Fr. Rich

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Wait for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted,
and wait for the LORD. — Psalm 27:14
FEAST OF FAITH
Penitential Rite Standing together in the presence of the Lord, we acknowledge our weakness, our sins
and faults and failings. But the penitential rite is really less about our sins than it is about God’s mercy. It is not
a time for individual confession, like a mini-sacrament of reconciliation. It is, rather, a preparatory rite, pre-
paring us to praise the mercy of Christ as we acknowledge our own weakness. When Simon Peter witnesses
the miraculous catch of fish—when he realizes who is in the boat with him—he falls at Jesus’ feet with the
words, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). We are like Peter. The more aware of the
Lord’s presence we become, the more awareness we also have of our sinfulness, our weakness.
The penitential rite of the Mass takes several forms, from the traditional Confiteor or “I confess” to a
litany, spoken or sung by the deacon or cantor with responses by the entire assembly. The penitential rite al-
ways includes the words Kyrie, eleison; Christe, eleison—Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy. This ancient
Greek prayer came to the Roman liturgy from the East, and still echoes in many of the litanies of the Eastern
Rite Churches. These words turn our gaze from our own weakness to the gentleness, the kindness, the forgiv-
ing love of Christ. —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

OD KS. RYSZARDA
Narodów Zjednoczonych w 1979 i 1995 roku. Jan Paweł II wezwał wówczas narody, by
Jan Paweł II przewodniczył blisko 200. uroczystościom beatyfikacyjnym i kanonizacyjnym. Zwołał 14 synodów bisk-
upów, mianował 232. kardynałów, wśród nich 10. Polaków. Był autorem ponad 100. dokumentów, w tym 14. encyklik.
1 maja odbędzie się beatyfikacja Jana Pawła II - ogłosił Watykan wraz z publikacją dekretu o uznaniu cudu
za wstawiennictwem polskiego papieża. Za cud uznano niewytłumaczalne całkowite ustąpienia choroby
Parkinsona u francuskiej zakonnicy. Benedykt XVI będzie osobiście przewodniczył beatyfikacji na Placu św.
Piotra.
powiedział: - Drodzy bracia i siostry, Polacy! Serdecznie pozdrawiam was wszystkich: obecnych tu w Rzymie, w Polsce i
Niedziela Wielkanocna, którą on sam dedykował Bożemu Miłosierdziu i w której wigilię zakończył swój ziemski żywot.
Ci, którzy go znali, ci którzy cenili go i kochali, nie mogą nie radować się wraz z Kościołem z tego wydarzenia.
Papieżem, przejęta z wrażenia gaździna pomyliła przygotowany tekst powitania Kardynała i
zamiast zatytułować go "najdostojniejszy", powiedziała: "Witojcie nom najpsystojniejszy ksieze
kardynale". Kardynał zaś spojrzał na nią z błyskiem w oku i odpowiedział: "Co prawda, to prawda".
