*Harper’s Letter*
When 150 Writers and Academics Signed Letter Condemning Cancel Culture, Liberal and Leftist
Writers Condemned Cancel Culture (With Obligatory Anti-Trump Nod)
The letter has some anti-Trump anti-conservative rhetoric early on despite the fact that these
issues are all coming from the far left. JK Rowling is among the writers and Noam Chomsky is
among the others who have signed the letter (Harpers).
From John Sexton: Despite all the throat clearing about the right, it’s really the popularity of this
new cancel culture on the left that is the main target. The more the left tries to mainstream these
ideas the more people on the left split off and criticize them for doing so. The first wave of people
rejecting it became the Intellectual Dark Web. Now you have another, larger wave of people, most
of whom are progressives, who are expressing concern about the recent rise of cancel culture (Hot
Air).
From Ted Cruz: Signs of the apocalypse: Never in my life have I agreed with Noam Chomsky. On
anything (Twitter).
From Tim Carney: I kinda thought the Harpers letter was pointless. Then it instantly outed
everyone who WANTS there to be a climate of fear. So it was a great service (Twitter).
From JK Rowling: I was very proud to sign this letter in defense of a foundational principle of a
liberal society: open debate and freedom of thought and speech (Twitter).

somehow, it was “transphobic” (Fox News).
The online left, which can’t decide whether left-wing censorship is a myth invented by its enemies
or a necessary tactic for destroying them, erupted at the betrayal. It wasn’t long before the
renunciations began. Jennifer Finney Boylan, a frequent New York Times contributor who had
signed the letter, pleaded for forgiveness on Twitter. She had not realized that not all the
signatories were of the caliber of the socialist intellectual Noam Chomsky, she wrote. “The
consequences,” she added, “are mine to bear. I am so sorry” (WSJ).
And the New York Times has declared saying someone doesn’t love their country is “nativist” (The
Federalist).

A New York Times Columnist Falls to the Cancel Culture
What she wrote does not devalue the work of Nicholas Kristof or Bret Stephens or other writers
who remain on those pages. But, combined with the absurd hysteria surrounding the op-ed last
month by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), the paper’s crisis — and its shrinking bubble — is fully
revealed. The limited worldview that Weiss described inside the newspaper will asphyxiate
everyone left behind and poison those for whom it is their only source of intellectual
nourishment (Washington Post). From Seth Mandel: The reactions from a disturbing portion of
the left press to the revelations about Bari–that she was harassed out of the NY Times by rank
antisemitic bullying–has been more rank antisemitism (Twitter).
