EMERGE
A 3-day new music reading laboratory and
concert webinar that will host daily
reading sessions, masterclasses, (such as
writing for the string quartet, extended
s t r i n g t e c h n i q u e s , e t c … ) a n d Q & A’s w i t h
industry leading musicians.
A THREE DAY NEW MUSIC READING VIRTUAL
WORKSHOP + VIRTUAL CONCERT
Composers of any age and nationality are invited to submit a new or
previously composed work up to 12 minutes in length. The work may be a
movement or excerpt of a larger work and may have previously been
performed. EMERGE will accept up to 12 composers and will provide
detailed insight by exploring and performing the work of each
participant.

At the conclusion of EMERGE, The Julius Quartet will host a virtual


concert of all selected works. The concert and workshops will be
professionally recorded. Each reading session and performance will be
separated by composer and sent to each participant for their own
personal use (i.e. website exposure, SoundCloud or similar-free
platforms). Commercial sale of the work performed at the workshop by
The Julius Quartet is prohibited.

SUBMISSION
GUIDELINES
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
The following submissions are required to be considered for the EMERGE
New Music Readings Workshop.

• One score submitted digitally in PDF format

• Work must not exceed 12 minutes in length

• Recording of the work is preferred, but not required (MIDI is


acceptable)

• A CV or resume (PDF format only)

• Short Biography not to exceed 250 words (PDF Format only)

• Works must have been written within the last five (5) years as of
September 1, 2020.

• Works that have been previously published, performed or


commercially recorded are welcome

• At this time, we are not able to support works with electronics for the
upcoming season.

• The selection committee will select 12 participants from the


applications submitted, no later than September 15th, 2020

WORKSHOP DETAILS
During the 3-day workshop composers will receive:

• Group workshops, incorporating 15-minute reading session and


critique for each composer per day for three days

• Seminars /masterclasses from the quartet

• Composer Masterclass: Offering real life experiences and advice

• A c c e s s t o T h e J u l i u s Q u a r t e t ’s d i g i t a l C h a m b e r C o n c e r t

• Recordings of all three workshop days and the EMERGE New Music
Concert. The digital workshop and concert will be professionally
recorded and sent to each participant.

• P o s s i b l e f u t u r e p e r f o r m a n c e s o f t h e c o m p o s e r ’s w o r k a t J u l i u s
Q u a r t e t ’s n e x t i n - p e r s o n c o n c e r t

• Must provide digital parts in pdf format (Letter size: 8.5x11) No later

• Participants are required to attend all three workshop days and the
evening concert

first reading and at the EMERGE virtual concert .
