Service members torn over coming out

In wake of repeal, some ready to talk,
others staying in closet

For one gay Air Force pilot, it remains business as usual as he

keeps his sexual orientation a secret despite passage of legislation
allowing for repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
The Charleston, S.C., resident, who spoke on condition of anonym-
ity, said he considers himself a private individual and sees no need to
make public to his Air Force comrades his gay identity.
“It’s just not my style,” he said. “So, no, I’m probably not going to
say anything. If somebody asks me, I might say, ‘Well, if you’re asking
the question, then you probably already know the answer to it, so I’ll
leave it at that.’”
The pilot said he sees no need to take a date to squadron picnic as
straight airmen might bring their spouses.
“As far I can tell, nobody suspects that I’m gay at work, other than
I’m single,” the pilot said. “We’re a bunch a pilots, so sometimes it’s
not easy for relationships, so a lot of guys that are even older than I
am have never been married, so it’s not uncommon. I don’t stand out
being in my early 30s and single.”

New RNC Chair Reince Preibus supports ban on same-sex marriage
PAGE 10 A Republican lawmaker in Maryland who plans to introduce a civil unions bill startled colleagues
this week by resigning from his position as minority leader in the State Senate one week before the
scheduled introduction of a same-sex marriage bill.
Sen. Allan Kittleman (R-Howard County) said he decided to withdraw from the minority leader post
he held for two years after determining he was not conservative enough for the other 11 GOP senators
in the 47-member Senate.
Observers at the state capital in Annapolis said it became clear to Kittleman that his moderate to
liberal views on social issues troubled the other GOP senators after he announced plans to introduce
legislation allowing civil unions in Maryland for same-sex and opposite-sex couples.
“I’m a social moderate and I wanted to stand up for what I believe in,” the Baltimore Sun quoted him
as saying. “It’s more important for me to stay true to my beliefs than it is for me to be the minority leader.”
socialagenda LGBT advocates pushing for a same-sex marriage bill in the Maryland Legislature had expressed
concern earlier this month that Kittleman’s civil unions measure might take away votes from the mar-

Mystery lingers about death of Minn. gay teen
MILTONA, Minn. — A high school senior who’d
lived in Minnesota and was gay appears to have
committed suicide, according to KSAX, a regional
ABC news affiliate there, although his family dis-
putes the report and says he died of coronary
edema.
About 10 p.m. on Jan. 15, the Douglas Coun-
ty Sheriff’s Office responded to an emergency
call at the home of the teen in Miltona, Minn.
They found 18-year-old Lance Lundsten in
need of emergency medical care. He was tak-
en to Douglas County Hospital where he died,
KSAX reported. The sheriff’s office confirmed to
KSAX that they believed Lundsten committed
suicide but they would not say the nature of the
emergency.
According to friends and his Facebook page,
Lundsten was openly gay. On a Facebook me-
morial page, friends said he’d been bullied at
school for his sexual orientation. Some students
who knew Lundsten believed the bullying may
have led to his suicide, KSAX reported.

Gay history museum opens in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO — A gay history museum, believed to be the first in the U.S. and
only the second in the world, has opened in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood.
The GLBT History Museum, a project of the GLBT Historical Society (an archives and
research center started in 1985), was slated to open this week at 4127 18th St. near
Castro Street. The space includes two galleries, a reception area and a museum shop.
With assistance from Bevan Dufty, former member of the San Francisco Board of
Supervisors for the district, the Historical Society negotiated an agreement under
which the master tenant for the storefront, Walgreen Company, constructed the
1,600-square-foot space to the society’s specifications. Funding from the City of
San Francisco, Castro district merchants and other sponsors and donors covered
the cost of custom fixtures and display cases, lighting and multimedia installations.
There are two debut exhibitions. One in the front shows memorabilia the Society
has collected in its 25 years. In the main gallery, 450 items give an overview of gay
life in San Francisco over nearly 100 years featuring items from the city’s Historical
Society, many of which have never been displayed before.
The GLBT History Museum joins the Schwules Museum, the queer museum
founded 25 years ago in Berlin, as one of only two stand-alone, full-scale museums
devoted to LGBT history. Admission is $5.

New hospital visitation regulations take effect

WASHINGTON — New federal regulations regarding patients’ hospital visitation
rights were scheduled to go into effect this week. These new regulations require all
hospitals participating in Medicaid and Medicare programs – virtually every hos-
pital in the country – to permit patients to designate visitors of their choosing and
prohibit discrimination in visitation based on a number of factors, including sexual
orientation and gender identity.

Facebook co-founder to wed his partner

NEW YORK — Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, 27, is planning to marry his

at Harvard and served as the social networking site’s spokesman. He’s now the
founder and director of jumo.com.
Eldridge is political director for Freedom to Marry, a same-sex marriage advo-

On Dec. 22, President Obama signed
into law legislation allowing for repeal of
the military’s gay ban, bringing to a close a
long struggle to repeal the 17-year-old law.
Following the signing of the legislation,
some service members say they intend
to make no changes in how they interact
with their military colleagues, others plan
to make their sexual orientation public,
while others say they’re already out to
others in their unit.
Alex Nicholson, executive director of
Servicemembers United, said he thinks
the service members will respond to the
lifting of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in the va-
riety of ways that civilian gays and lesbi-

riage bill. In other states, lawmakers re-
luctant to back same-sex marriage have
embraced civil unions as a less contro-
versial alternative, saying it provides the
same legal benefits as marriage.
But this week, the head of the state-
wide LGBT group Equality Maryland said
she was hopeful that Kittleman’s action
would create an opportunity for same-sex
marriage advocates to point out the differ-
ences between marriage and civil unions
and why civil unions don’t provide full pro-
tections for lesbian and gay couples.
“This was an incredibly brave and
important move on his part to stand by
his principles,” said Morgan Meneses-
Sheets, Equality Maryland’s executive
director.
“And we really thank him for that and
we will continue to communicate with him
and talk with him,” she said. “We certain-
ly hope we will have his support when the
marriage bill comes.”
Meneses-Sheets said the marriage bill
is scheduled to be introduced next Tues-
day at a time when her organization and
most political observers believe support-
ers of the bill have the votes to pass it in
both chambers.
Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has
said he will sign a same-sex marriage
measure approved by the legislature.
Kittleman has not said when he plans
to formally introduce his civil unions bill,
and he has not released details of its con-
tent other than to say it would cover both
same-sex and heterosexual couples.

“It’s a very discerning audience
there,” she says. “I’m excited.”
The venue doesn’t regularly book
country acts but has hosted shows by
Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, the
late Johnny Cash as well as current acts
like Sugarland and the Zac Brown Band.
Michael Jaworek booked Wright sev-

Zed in the early years of her career and
is excited to have her play the Birchmere
where he’s been booking acts since
1988.
“Musically, her current work fits the
club, plus she has an audience,” he
says. “It’s made up of her old fans from
her Top 40 country career and the new
ones who have discovered her since
coming out. The new album shows that
she can write solid songs and is pro-
duced by one of the best songwriters
today, or any day, Rodney Crowell. We
don’t book many country acts but we do
book those we think can fill the venue.”
It’s been, of course, a life-altering time
for Wright, who came out last May with a
high-profile media blitz that included the
Crowell collaboration album “Lifted Off
the Ground,” the aforementioned memoir
“Like Me” and appearances on “Oprah,”
at Capital Pride and more. She’s known
for a string of late ’90s/early ’00s country
hits that found her charting about 15 sin-

ing the No. 1 cut “Single White Female.”
“Ground” is the 40-year-old Kansas na-

Suzanne Westenhoefer plays the Birchmere in Alexandria, Va., next weekend.

Westenhoefer gets ‘Semi-Sweet’ at Birchmere

Suzanne Westenhoefer will be performing at the Birchmere Music Hall (3701 Mt.
Vernon Ave.) in Alexandria on Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. as part of her “Semi-Sweet” tour.
“I’m calling the new show Semi-Sweet because there’s a lot of sweet stuff to talk
about …. and a lot of stuff that, well, isn’t,” says Westenhoefer on her website. “It’s
all about the changes that have occurred in my life over the past year. Some have
been good and some not-so-much. I thought the name Semi-Sweet captured that
perfectly.”
The show will have new material.
Westenhoefer, voted at “America’s Funniest Lesbian” by Curve magazine, was
the first openly gay comedian to appear on television when she appeared on an
episode of “Sally” (with Sally Jessy Raphael) in 1991.
She was also the first openly gay comic to host her own HBO comedy special
in 1994.
Westenhoefer will be seen in the upcoming Nicole Conn film, “A Perfect End-
ing,” which is scheduled to begin filming this spring.
Tickets are $45 and can be purchased at birchmere.com.
For more information on Westenhoefer, visit her website, suzannew.com.
