U N I V E R S I T Y BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Dear Prospective Applicant,

As the current Student Member of the Purdue University Board of Trustees, I am writing to
share information about the Board and to explain several responsibilities of trustees.

The Board of Trustees consists of ten members. The Governor of Indiana appoints seven of
these trustees, one of whom is the student member; the other three are selected by the
Purdue Alumni Association. All ten trustees are voting members, including the student trustee.
The student serves a two-year term, while the remaining nine members are appointed to three-
year terms that can be renewed at the discretion of the Governor.

The Board is the highest level of governance at Purdue University. The Board provides
governance to the main campus-West Lafayette, as well as the three regional campuses in
Calumet, Fort Wayne, and North Central. Together, the four campuses consist of over 74,000
students and 19,000 faculty and staff. The Board serves two main roles: the chief fiduciary and
the strategic body at the University. Examples of fiduciary responsibilities include budget
balancing, campus master planning, and development. The Board approves the strategic plan,
New Synergies, which helps guide the University. As a trustee, the student member works with
the Board in guiding the University.

Decisions made by the Board shape the future of Purdue and impact the students, faculty, staff,
and the community at Purdue. Since Purdue is a major research and land-grant university, these
decisions also impact the regional economies, the citizens, and the entire higher education
system in Indiana. Purdue University plays an increasingly vital role in addressing challenges
and issues in the economy, higher education, and around the globe.

The role of the student trustee is critical in this process. The student trustee participates in
every facet of Board activities and provides a unique, on-campus, student perspective to Board
discussions. This perspective is valued and needed to provide a comprehensive viewpoint
during Board discussion and activity. For this reason, the student member is an important
component of the Board of Trustees.

While participating at this level of governance provides a plethora of opportunities to serve the
University, it is also important to realize that the position requires a significant investment of
time. Although the commitment varies from week to week based on the schedule of Board
meetings and other University functions, obligations while serving on the Board are significant
in nature. Along with time commitment, effective communication is vital as a Board member.
The student trustee must be able to communicate in a concise, candid manner to be successful
in the position.
Serving on the Board of Trustees has been a tremendous opportunity to gain a better
understanding of the University and higher education, to interact with people who care about
Purdue, and to serve this University. Getting the opportunity to serve Purdue and help advance
the University at this level has been an incredible experience. If serving on the Board of
Trustees interests you, I highly encourage you to apply.

Additional information about the Board of Trustees and the application can be accessed online
at http://purdue.edu/bot. Completed applications must be submitted by February 11, 2011, to
