Frequency response
The frequency response characterises the range of frequencies which a pair of head-
phones can reproduce. It is measured in hertz (Hz). The average human ear is capable
of hearing frequencies ranging from about 20 Hz to 16,000 Hz. The frequency
response alone does not reveal much about the reproduction quality.

Total harmonic distortion (THD)

The THD represents the percentage of non-linear distortions of a signal, the
so-called harmonics. These particularly occur at lower frequencies when the motion
of the diaphragm cannot follow the electrical signal precisely.

Impedance
Impedance is the headphones’ resistance to alternating current and is measured in
ohms (Ω). The impedances of Sennheiser headphones range from 16 to 600 ohms
which means they can be connected to all standard hi-fi components.

Signal-to-noise ratio
Difference between the wanted signal and the background noise of an electrically
operated device (e.g. amplifier, microphone). Signal-to-noise ratio is measured in dB.

Introduction

Sennheiser’s headphone range is comprised of four different types of headphones:

• Dynamic headphones
• Electrostatic headphones
• Cordless infra-red headphones
• Wireless radio frequency headphones

Description of models
HD... Dynamic headphones (Headphones, Dynamic)
Sennheiser’s HD range of headphones are fitted with electrodynamic
transducers. They are normally equipped with a 3.5 mm stereo jack plug
and a 1/4” (6.3 mm) adaptor and can therefore be connected to all
standard headphone outputs (amplifiers, CD players, DAT, DCC, MD,
TV, personal stereos, camcorders etc.).
HD 590 Prestige
Sennheiser’s range includes both open and closed headphones. Closed
models provide better attenuation of surrounding noise, while open
headphones give a more spacious sound.

HDC... NoiseGard™ headphones (Headphones, Dynamic with noise Compensation)

The HDC series of headphones are fitted with active noise compensation
(NoiseGard™) circuits which considerably reduce external low frequency
noise.
HDC 451-1 NoiseGard™ mobile
HE... Electrostatic headphones (Headphones, Electrostatic)
Sennheiser’s HE headphones are fitted with electrostatic transducers.
Their operation requires a polarising voltage, so a special amplifier is
needed to process the audio signal.

IS... Cordless infra-red systems (Infra-red System)

The IS series consists of complete systems of infra-red transmitters and HE 90/HEV 90
headphones. It incorporates both traditional analogue and modern digital
technology.

HDI... Dynamic infra-red headphones (Headphones, Dynamic, Infra-red)

RI... Infra-red stethoset receivers (Receiver, Infra-red)
As only one infra-red transmitter is necessary to operate as many infra-red
headphones as desired, Sennheiser offers supplementary headphones. IS 380 system with HDI 380 headphones
Classic headphones are designated by the letters HDI, stethoset receivers by
the letters RI.

RS .... Cordless radio frequency systems (Radio frequency System)

The RS series consists of complete systems of RF transmitters and
headphones with integrated RF receivers.

HDR .... Dynamic radio frequency headphones (Headphones, Dynamic, RF)

RR .... Radio frequency stethoset receivers (Receiver, RF)
RS 85 system with HDR 85 headphones
As RF transmitters can be used with any number of RF headphones,
Sennheiser offers supplementary headphones. Classic headphones are

designated by the letters HDR in their model number, RF stethoset

receivers by the letters RR.

Dynamic Headphones

How the electrodynamic transducer works

Dynamic headphones operate on the moving-coil principle. The headphones’
diaphragm is attached to a coil of wire held in suspension in the field of a
permanent magnet. When an alternating current (i.e. the audio signal) passes
through the coil, it generates a magnetic field. This coil field interacts with that of
the permanent magnet and causes the coil (and thus the diaphragm) to move
forwards and backwards depending on the direction of current flow. This vibration
of the diaphragm produces pressure sound waves, i.e. the original audible audio
information.
The entire dynamic system needs to be as lightweight as possible in order to ensure
a fast transient response. For this reason, Sennheiser use coils made from
aluminium copper or even pure aluminium in their high-quality headphones.

Connection cables
All dynamic headphones (with the exception of the HD 25 and HD 25 SP) are
supplied with oxygen-free copper cables.

Electrostatic Headphones

How electrostatic transducers work

Electrostatic transducers are comprised of an ultra-thin diaphragm sandwiched be-
tween two acoustically transparent electrodes which drive the diaphragm over its
entire surface. The diaphragm consists of an extremely thin gold-plated polymer
foil which responds to the slightest changes in the audio signal. Its elliptic shape
suppresses standing waves, which can result at the edge from the even flow of the
shape. The two honeycomb, perforated electrodes, made from high-tensile special
glass and plated on one side, have been specially developed to produce a high
polarisation voltage and ensure an outstandingly high level of sensitivity.

Connection cable
Electrostatic headphones are equipped with an oxygen-free 6-core OFC copper
cable as standard.

Cordless IR Headphones

How infra-red technology works

Cordless infra-red audio transmission overcomes the constrictions of a headphone
cable. Modulated infra-red light replaces the cable linking the sound source to the
headphones.
The basic infra-red transmission path consists of a transmitting diode which
radiates the infra-red light, and a corresponding infra-red receiving diode. This is
also the operating principle of, for example, a television infra-red remote control.
The transmitter emits the IR light from a row of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The
radiated light has a wavelength of approximately 880 nm or 950 nm, depending on
the type of diode used. The light is not radiated at a single frequency, but over a
narrow range of frequencies in the infra-red light spectrum.
The infra-red diodes are modulated by varying the intensity of the light they emit.
The simplest form of modulation operates by varying the intensity of the light in
relation to the sound signal. However, low frequencies are subject to interference
from fluorescent lights in this type of system, so Sennheiser uses a combination of
amplitude and frequency modulation. Each channel of a stereo signal uses a carrier
frequency that is amplitude-modulated, the audio signal is then frequency-modu-
lated onto this carrier. By the use of modern technology, carrier frequencies of up
to 2.8 MHz can be used.
The optical power output of an infra-red diode is only about 16 mW (GaAs) or
20 mW (GaAlAs), so a number of emitter diodes are used to increase the overall
radiating power of the transmitter, with the radiated pattern being controlled by
the diode’s lens.
The transmitter diodes work in conjunction with the receiver’s photodiodes which
convert the incoming infra-red light signal back into an electrical signal. When light
is received by the photodiode, a current is generated in the diode. Because of the
very small photosensitive surface area of 7 mm2, receiver diodes are usually used in
conjunction with convex “frog eye” shaped lenses. A “black filter” is also used with
the receiver diode to filter out the effects of visible light.
Infra-red audio transmission is the ideal solution where cordless headphones are
required for different sound systems in the same building, as the infra-red signal is
restricted to the room.

Wireless RF Headphones

How radio frequency technology works

Sennheiser’s latest headphone development are wireless headphone systems with
RF audio transmission. Here, the cable linking the sound source to the headphones
is replaced by radio waves – just as infra-red light replaces the cable for infra-red
headphones.
The basic RF transmission path consists of a transmitter connected to the sound
source which transmits the audio signal to an RF receiver integrated into the
headphones.
In the transmitter, the audio signal is modulated onto an RF carrier and then radi-
ated via the transmitter’s antenna. The RF headphones have a built-in receiver
which picks up the radiated signal, demodulates it and converts it back to the
original audio signal.
Most Sennheiser RF systems feature three switchable channels, thus ensuring
optimum reception – systems which are operated close to one another can be set to
different channels. Of course, the transmitter and the headphone receiver have to
operate on the same frequency, so the headphones have a tuning control to set
them to the channel chosen on the transmitter. A special filter protects the
headphone receiver against interfering signals e.g. from amateur radio
transmission.
The technology used is basically that of the tried and tested RF transmission
systems used on stage – only that, with headphones, the sound transmitted is directly
reproduced and the receiver is mobile.
The great advantage of RF transmission over infra-red transmission is that the RF
audio signal can travel through walls and ceilings – which offers an unmatched
freedom of movement. Sennheiser RF headphones can have a range of up to about
100 m (925 MHz models have lower range), so the user can move around in the
house or even outside, e.g. in the garden.
Please note: Due to varying licensing regulations, not all headphone systems are
legal in all countries. We would therefore advise purchasing a system only in the
country of intended use.

Headphones with NoiseGard™
Active Noise Compensation

One of the greatest stress factors of our time is noise. Research has shown that
ambient noise affects the nervous system and can cause tiredness, poor
concentration, tension and irritability. Of even greater concern is the permanent
damage to the hearing that can result from such noise at high levels.

How the NoiseGard™ active noise compensation system works

The NoiseGard™ active noise compensation system is based on the physical
principle of phase inversion. Tiny microphones in the ear-pieces pick up the
extraneous noise, which the NoiseGard™ circuitry then cancels out by producing
anti-noise (i.e. the original noise phase-shifted through 180°). As the annoying low Noise compensation with NoiseGard™ (open)
frequency noise is largely situated in a different frequency range than speech, the Attenuation/dB
0
human voice still remains clearly understable.
Reduction of subjectively
perceived noise with
The diagram on the right shows how the NoiseGard™ noise compensation system NoiseGard™
10
works with open headphones. A 10 dB reduction in noise is subjectively perceived
as a halving of its volume.
