LEARNED FROM THE LAST MODULE?
WAYS OF
SEPARATING
MIXTURES
Examine the following pictures.
Is it possible to separate the components of the
mixtures presented?

In a mixture of two immiscible  liquids

(Immiscibility is the property where two
substances are not capable of combining to
form a  homogeneous  mixture. The
components are said to be "immiscible."),
such as oil and water, one substance stays
on top of the other substance in the
container. One way of separating
substances in such mixture is through
decantation.
WAYS OF
SEPARATING
MIXTURES
Decantation is the process of separating the
components of a mixture by pouring away a
liquid from solid substances which have
settled at the bottom of the container. Two
liquids with different densities which are
separated into two layers can similarly be
separated by pouring the less dense liquid
out.

For example, the sand in a sand-and-water

mixture, can be separated from the water
by letting the sand settle at the bottom of
the container and then carefully pouring
the water out of the container.

Decantation is also applied when washing

rice grains before cooking. In this process,
water is poured out slowly from the pot,
leaving the rice grains behind.

Did you ever wonder how salt is made?
Look at the pictures below.

Salt: it's on everyone's table. In fact, we need salt to live - if

you didn't get any salt, you'd die. But do you know where it
comes from?

Where Does Salt Comes From?

Table salt mostly comes from two places:
1.) The ocean. The ocean is really salty. If you leave out a
dish of ocean water in the sun and all the water dries up,
you'll be left with a big pile of salt.

2.) Salt mines. Some places on earth used to be underwater

but aren't any longer. When the water dried up, it left a lot
of salt behind. Some salt is taken from these big deposits
of salt.
WAYS OF SEPARATING
MIXTURES
The principle of evaporation is applied in salt
production and processing.

Evaporation is the process by which a liquid changes

into vapor or gas. When the temperature of a liquid
is raised to boiling point, the liquid becomes vapor.

Evaporation is also applied in preserving fish by

drying. Water is present in the body of the fish, and
the fish is exposed under the sun to remove its water
content. The water in the wet fish evaporates and the
remaining substance is dried up due to heat.
WAYS OF SEPARATING
MIXTURES
How do you extract coconut milk from a coconut?
Look at the picture below.

Coconut milk is the white juice extract from a fresh coconut. It

has so many healthy benefits. It also makes delicious dishes.

Coconut milk is the milk that is strained after grating or

blending the coconut meat. The grated coconut meat is mixed
with a small amount of hot water. After mixing and squeezing,
a strainer or a small piece of clean cloth is used to separate the
grated coconut meat from the coconut milk.

This process of separating the coconut milk from the grated

coconut meat is called filtration.
WAYS OF SEPARATING
MIXTURES
Filtration is the process of separating solid and
liquid substances by using a porous filter, such as
strainer or clean cloth, that allows the liquid to
pass through. The filter (strainer or clean cloth)
must have fine holes through which solid particles
cannot pass.

Getting rid of sand and sediments in well water is

often a serious problem for many people using
deep well or pump well as source of water for
them to have something to drink and for them to
prepare food. In this case, filtration process is a
great way to get rid of the sand and sediments
from the well water.
Ways of Separating

Mixtures
What happens when a magnet is placed into a pail of sand?

Look at the pictures below.

Ways of Separating

Mixtures
Magnetic separation   is the process of

separating components of mixtures by using

magnets to attract magnetic materials. The

process that is used for magnetic separation

detaches non-magnetic materials with those

which are magnetic.

Suppose you have a mixture made up of

pebbles and iron nails. One easy way of

separating the nails from the pebbles is through

the use of a magnet. To do this, the magnet

should be placed near the mixture. The

magnetic iron nails will cling to the magnet,

separating them from the pebbles.

In a construction site, nails may accidentally

mix with sand. In this mixture, a magnet can

pick up the nails. Magnets can easily separate

iron nails and other materials such as pins that

mix with sand.

SHARPEN YOUR KNOWLEDGE
Read each sentence carefully. From the words in
the parentheses, encircle the correct word that is
being described.
1. This process involves pouring the liquid component

into another container without disturbing the

sediment at the bottom. (filtration, decantation,

evaporation)

2. The liquid components dry up when heated or

exposed under the heat of the sun in this process

of separating mixtures. (evaporation, decantation,

filtration)

3. This process involves separating solid particles

from a liquid substance using a strainer or a clean

piece of cloth. (decantation, filtration,

evaporation)

4. Materials made of iron mixed with other materials

in a mixture can be separated using this method.

(filtration, decantation, magnetic separation)

5. This method is used to separate solid components

from liquid components using a filter with fine

holes which the solid components cannot pass

through. (filtration, decantation, magnetic

separation)
