Atlantic Veterinary College

at the University of Prince Edward Island

Atlantic Canada’s College of Veterinary Medicine

The Atlantic Veterinary College is committed to
excellence and innovation in
Teaching, Research, and Service
The University of Prince Edward Island, located within the city
of Charlottetown, is home to approximately 4,000 full-time
students. The campus is safe and inviting, with nine academic
buildings, three residences, the library, dining hall, sports centre,
arena and aquatics complex, and student centre—all within easy
walking distance of one another. A traditional central quadrangle
is filled with trees and park benches. The National Research
Council’s Institute for Nutrisciences and Health recently opened
on campus, and an expansion of the Atlantic Veterinary College
is in progress.

At the University of Prince Edward Island we offer an education
rich in knowledge and opportunity. Consistently ranked as one
of Canada’s top ten primarily undergraduate universities, UPEI
is one of Canada’s top research universities with national award-
winning faculty. At UPEI you’ll become a part of a tightly knit
community that takes great pride in supporting our students.

AVC—An exceptional education

Centrally located along Canada’s eastern seaboard on one of the world’s most beautiful islands, the
Atlantic Veterinary College makes its home in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. One of the six
faculties of the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), the Atlantic Veterinary College—or AVC as
it is commonly known—was established in 1986 and quickly became renowned for its exceptional
educational programs and student experiences.

A unique feature of AVC is its small class size. The college accepts only 60 students into its Doctor of
Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program each year. This is one of the smallest class sizes in North America
and provides students with abundant opportunities to participate in class discussions, demonstrations,
and hands-on experiences. It also fosters close relationships with teachers and fellow students. Professors
know students on a first-name basis and are strongly committed to ensuring students have an exceptional
learning experience and become highly competent veterinary professionals.

AVC is known for having a high level of student-teacher interaction. Dr. Shawn McKenna
(centre), AVC graduate and award-winning teacher (2006 Vetoquinol Clinical Teaching Award, 2007
Merial Award of Excellence in Clinical Teaching, 2006 SAVS Teaching Award) in AVC’s department
of Health Management, reviews class material with Katie (Nova Scotia) and Mike (New Brunswick)
from the Class of 2008.

Veterinary medicine—A choice career
Veterinary medicine consistently ranks among the most respected of professions.
Veterinarians are well-known and much appreciated in their communities,
playing an exciting and dynamic role in society. In addition to providing
care for animals, veterinarians contribute to human health, food safety,
public health, and wildlife conservation.

A world of career opportunities is available to doctors of veterinary medicine.

From private practice, government, teaching, and research, to working
in industry and public health, today’s veterinarians are able to pursue
their careers in a variety of diverse and challenging fields.

At AVC, our students are highly sought after by employers due

to the success and reputation of our DVM program. As a result,
AVC students graduate with secured employment, enabling
them to know where they will be starting their veterinary

AVC—Proven success
AVC graduates consistently achieve high success rates on professional licensing exams, have excellent employment
opportunities around the world, and are rated highly by employers for their preparedness and skill in the workplace.

AVC is also a world-class research institution and a regional centre for the provision of advanced diagnostic and clinical
services. The College makes great strides in animal and human health through its research programs. Students have
opportunities to work alongside top researchers and to learn from them in the laboratory and classroom. AVC has the
only full-service referral veterinary hospital in Atlantic Canada. Each year the College’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital
cares for over 5,000 animals in its small- and large-animal hospitals. The Farm Service program contributes to the health
and well-being of thousands more animals off-site at farms and in aquaculture settings around the region. AVC students
work closely with faculty clinicians to learn first-hand about the care and diseases of companion animals, horses, food
animals, and aquaculture species.

AVC has 14 centres of expertise, many of which are unique. Centres such as the Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre
(the only centre of its kind in Canada), the AVC Lobster Science Centre (the only lobster research institute within a
veterinary college in the world), the Centre for Aquatic Health Science, and the Centre for Veterinary Epidemiological
Research are a few examples of the college’s ground-breaking research, educational, and service activities. AVC is
recognized by other veterinary colleges around the world for its expertise and extensive research and service in aquaculture
and fish health. AVC’s Diagnostic Services Unit is known globally for its mastery at providing quality assurance and
proficiency testing for more than 300 diagnostic labs around the world.
