 From The Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good! In today’s Gospel from Matthew
(4:12-23), Jesus continues in the first stages of his
public ministry. Following the arrest of John the
Baptist, He “withdraws” to Capernaum by the shores of
the Sea of Galilee. Basically, this withdrawal is
something of a strategic retreat. From this point on,
Capernaum will serve as the home base of Jesus’ public
ministry. Jesus gives his first sermon at the town’s
synagogue. He cures Peter’s mother-in-law at her
home close by. Later on, four men tear apart the roof
of that same house to lower a paralytic who is healed
by Our Lord. Capernaum is well situated—to the west,
it borders on the Via Maris (“The Way of the Sea”) an
ancient trade route connecting Egypt with the lands of
Mesopotamia (modern-day Syria, Turkey, Iraq and
Iran). To the east, it hugs the shoreline of a region
dotted with the numerous towns and villages. Easily
accessible by boat, they serve as focal points
on Jesus’ itinerary.
It is precisely on these idyllic shores that Jesus calls
His first disciples while they are fishing. Interestingly,
Scripture tells us that Jesus “saw” them first before He
spoke to them. Jesus “saw” them not just in physical
terms—He saw them as who they really were in their
deepest being, and what they were capable of becom-
ing spiritually. After Jesus “saw” these men, He called
to them—again reaching their deepest dreams, hopes
and longings. In an instant, they threw down their nets
and turned their backs on everything they had ever
known or valued in order to follow Him. Immediately
trusting in Jesus, they surrendered their routines, their
work and whatever control they imagined they had in
their lives. From that point on, their lives would never
be the same again.
Jesus “sees” us and “calls” us as well. Our Lord sees
us in all of our humanity—in our strengths and
weaknesses; in our own dreams, hopes and struggles.
He calls us to Himself—not only to heal and strengthen
us, but to invite us to share in His ministry of
proclaiming the Good News of God’s Kingdom to
others. In this ongoing process of spiritual
transformation, our lives, too, will never be the same.
A subtext to this week’s readings is the annual
celebration of the Week of Prayer for Church Unity. In
1908, the Graymoor Friars, members of a religious
community in the Episcopal Church in the United
States, entered the Roman Catholic Church as a group,
and ever since have committed themselves to praying
and working for the reunion of the Christian family.
Even though visible corporate unity has continued to
elude us, we can see on a daily basis the growing of
mutual respect and collaboration between and among
Christians of every tradition. That said, there is still
much work to be done; unity within the Church and
among all Christians will never be achieved unless or
until we open ourselves fully to the Spirit and commit
ourselves to the process of mutual acceptance and
reconciliation. We here at San Luis Rey Parish can
continue to do our part through our prayers,
hospitality, and service. As a parish family in the
Franciscan tradition, we continue to be challenged, in
the words of Jesus to Francis, to “rebuild My Church.”

Opportunities at the Old Mission
Serenity Retreat with Fr. Tom Weston, SJ
January 28 -30, 2011
Here is an opportunity to spend a weekend with women
and men in recovery from alcoholism and addiction. Our
retreat is open to folks in AA, NA and Al-Anon. The retreat
will focus on the 12-Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous with time
for prayer and meditation. Fr. Tom Weston, SJ has been
involved in 12-Step Programs since 1976. He counsels,
conducts workshops and seminars and preaches retreats
internationally and often. This retreat begins with dinner
Friday at 6 pm and ends with lunch on Sunday. Private single
room $240; Shared room $190 per person; Commuter $100.
Obedience of Faith

Kazakhstan, the Holy Land, and Native American territories in
the southwestern U.S. Envelopes are available on the seats.

way in helping us evangelize and serve communities that are

should be following after is Him. “Come
after me,” is not just an invitation that Jesus extended to the
first apostles. It is an invitation that He extends to each of us
every day of our lives.
Prayer Formation & Opportunities
CENTERING PRAYER: is a renewal of the rich
tradition of contemplative prayer in the Christian
Church. It is designed to reduce obstacles to an
intimate personal relationship with God. Our
centering prayer group meets every Wednesday
evening from 7:00-8:30 p.m. for prayer and instruction in
Rm. #12 in the McKeon Ctr. For additional information, log

INTERCESSORY PRAYER: our parishioners have the opportu-
nity to write their needs and blessings in the Intercessory
Prayer books that are located in the Serra Center and the
Parish Chapel. Members of this ministry meet each Saturday,
from 8:15-9:00 a.m. in Rm. 209 to pray for all members and
the intentions written by the parishioners in the books.
Members may also pray at home. Anyone can be part of this
ministry: shut-ins, retired, etc. For further information,

Querida Familia Parroquial,
¡Paz y todo bien!
En el Evangelio de hoy de Mateo (4:12-23), Jesús continúa en
los primeros grados de un ministerio público. Después del
evento de Juan el Bautista, El se aleja a Capernaún por las
riberas del Mar de Galilea. Básicamente, ese retraimiento es
algo así como un retiro estratégico. Después de este punto,
Capernaún servirá como un punto base para el ministerio
público de Jesús. Jesús da su primer sermón en la sinagoga
del pueblo. El cura la suegra de Pedro en su casa cerca del
área. Más tarde, cuatro hombres rompen el techo de la mis-
ma casa para bajar un paralítico que es sanado por Nuestro
Señor. Capernaún está bien situada—al oeste tiene la familia
de Vía María (El Camino hacia el Mar) una ruta comercial
antigua conectando a Egipto con las tierras de Mesopotamia
(modernamente Siria, Turquía, Irac e Irán.) Al este ella abraza
las orillas de una región llena de pueblos y aldeas numerosas.
Estando accesible por barcos, ellas sirven como puntos de
enfoque en el itinerario de Jesús.
Es precisamente en estos mares idílicos donde Jesús llama a
sus discípulos mientras pescaban. Es interesante cómo las
Escrituras nos dicen que Jesús los “vió” a ellos primero antes
de El hablarles. Jesús los “vió” no solo en términos físicos—El
los vió como ellos eran realmente en la profundidad de su ser
y hasta qué punto ellos eran capaces de ser espirituales. Des-
pués de Jesús “ver” estos hombres, El los llamó de nuevo
alcanzando sus sueños, sus esperanzas, y sus anhelos más
profundos. En un instante, ellos tiraron sus redes y le dieron
la espalda a todo lo que ellos habían sabido o valorado para
seguirlo a El. Inmediatamente, confiando en Jesús, ellos en-
tregaron sus rutinas, su trabajo y todo el control que ellos
imaginaban que tenían en sus vidas. Desde ese momento en
adelante, sus vidas nunca serían igual.
Jesús nos “ve” a nosotros y nos “llama” igualmente. Nuestro
Señor nos ve en toda nuestra humanidad—en nuestras forta-
lezas y en nuestras debilidades; en nuestros sueños propios,
en nuestras esperanzas y luchas. El nos llama hacia El—no
solo para sanarnos y fortalecernos, más bien para invitarnos
a compartir con El Su ministerio de Proclamar la Buena Nue-
va del Reino de Dios. En este proceso contínuo de transfor-
mación espiritual, nuestras vidas también, nunca van a ser
igual.
Un tema que continúa al final de estas lecturas semanales
es la celebración anual de la Semana de Oración Para la
Unidad de la Iglesia. En el año 1908, los Frailes de Gray-
moor, miembros de una comunidad religiosa de la Iglesia
Episcopal en los Estados Unidos,

entraron en la Iglesia Católica Romana formaron como un
grupo y desde entonces se han dedicado a la oración y a
trabajar por la unión de la familia Cristiana. Aún cuando la
unidad visible corporativa ha continuado eludiéndonos,
nosotros podemos ver en una base diaria el respeto mu-
tuo y la colaboración creciente entre los Cristianos de
todas las tradiciones. Habiendo dicho esto, hay mucho
trabajo para llevarse a cabo; la unidad dentro de la Iglesia
y entre todos los Cristianos nunca se logrará a menos que
o hasta que nosotros nos abramos completamente al
Espíritu y nos comprometamos al proceso de aceptación
y de reconciliación mutua. Nosotros aquí, en la Parroquia
de San Luis Rey, podemos continuar haciendo nuestra
parte a través de la oración, de la hospitalidad y del servi-
cio. Como familia parroquial en la tradición Franciscana,
nosotros estamos siendo retados en las palabras de Jesús
a Francisco, de “Reconstruir Mi Iglesia.”
