FINAL YEAR PROJECT SYNOPSIS

College D.J. college of Engg. & Tech.

Class B.tech. final year
Branch Mechanical engineering
Project Title: SOLAR POWERED TRIKE
Sector: Mechanical/automobile Engg.
Purpose: • To Provide free, 'green' transportation for short distances
(<15miles), thus it must never plug into a wall socket, or emit
any pollutants.
• Charges while at work
• Cheap, simple, and low maintenance.
• Draws attention to the practical application of green energies,
and promotes Fossil Fuel alternatives.
• Reduces excess automobile wear and pollution from cold
driving / short, in town trips.

Project Duration: August’10-February’11

Total Project Budget: Rs. 15,000-18,000

Objective

The objective of this project is to design, build, and test a lightweight human solar powered trike that will
improve upon the capabilities offered by current vehicles.

• Maximum Assist Speed – 15-18 MPH depending upon the weight of rider

• Range – Around 10-15miles

• Weight – less than 100kg

• Suspension – three wheel independent with damping

Need

BP's oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico and the latest troubles in the Middle East could have an unexpected
outcome for the auto industry: a boost for solar vehicles.

Utilities

• Useful for short distance travelling up to around 10 miles which means saving of fossil
fuels and using sun as the primary resource of energy.
• Eco-friendly vehicle that’s not emits any pollutant.
• Low cost vehicle.
• Can be used as public vehicles.
Market overview & forecast

With the progress of electronic control and motor drive of the vehicle systems, the demand for on-board
electricity, especially for high-power consuming devices is increasing. Under the strict environmental
regulations and incentive polices for eco-cars in every countries, fuel economy is becoming a commercial
value, and the demand for power management (how to store and use the electricity efficiently) is
increasing as well as the importance of current sensors used in such power management systems. The
total in-vehicle current sensor market in 2009 is estimated to be 12,681 million yen (based on the
shipment). Impacted by the global economic recession, new car sales are expected to fall into the
doldrums, especially in the advanced countries. In the meantime, however, the current sensor market is
expected to grow, with increasing demand for accessory battery applications as the installation of charge
discharge control system on passenger vehicles will increase in European and Japanese market. In
addition, the demand for HEV and EV applications will increase along with the spreads of HEV and EV.

Procedure

The following steps will be used to accomplish the goals of this project:

• Research existing human powered and power assisted vehicles – A comprehensive

search for existing powered and un-powered HPV’s will be conducted to evaluate how other vehicles
compare to the proposed specifications of this project. Vehicles will be evaluated by cost, range,
weight, and power to see what is the current state of the art.

• Create Excel performance model -Build an analytical model to predict performance of the
vehicle. Model will include calculations for rolling resistance, aerodynamic drag, and motor and
transmission losses. Model will allow for range and top speed predictions using different components
to aid in selection of the correct motor and batteries to meet the specifications.

• Develop design specifications – Create a Design Specifications document outlining the

vehicle’s design requirements. Document will define performance, weight, and cost requirements for
the project. This document will also describe the analyses and tests required to meet the
specifications.

• Design and create solid model of power assisted vehicle – A tricycle will be used for
many of the vehicle’s components such as seat, wheels, controls, and drive train components. Solid
models of the Sun trike’s existing components will be built in pro/e, and a new frame, suspension,
and power train using will be designed.

• Perform weight study – Calculate weights for all components using the solid model and
determine the mass distribution of vehicle using riders of different weights. Weight should be evenly
distributed between the three wheels and within the weight target.

• Produce drawings for fabricated components – Produce detailed drawings for all fabricated
components. Create assembly drawing and parts list for all required components.

• Assemble prototype vehicle – Assemble all components and bench test sub-assemblies. Test
motor – controller module before installing on vehicle, road test vehicle and adjust as required.

• Test vehicle – Instrument and test vehicle per tests specified in design requirements document.
Modifications will be if necessary and retest as needed, analyze, and document results.

Outcomes

• This is a practical vehicle for trips with passengers and cargo as well.

• The range is about 10 miles and the top speed is about 15-18 miles/hour depending upon
the weight of rider, making this vehicle useful for within your neighbourhood.

• This is a vehicle for transforming our consciousness about how we use energy.
