French Luxury Brands In India

The Indian personal care market couldn’t have asked for more! After popular French
brands like L’Oreal, Clarins, Vichy, Christian Dior, Nina Ricci, S.T. Dupont, Cartier and
Louis Vuitton making their presence felt in India, it is time to welcome yet another up-
market luxury brand. This time, it is the famous French hair and salon chain, Jean Claude
Biguine, which has entered the Indian retail market. The French brand plans to invest
more in India, appreciating the potentially of the ever-growing Indian market. The reason
why French brands are doing so well in India is because their goods and services are
reputed for their reliability and can be trusted to be credible, more so in the high-end
segment.

The removal of trade barriers in the Indian economy has boosted the foreign brands to
create a niche for themselves here. The upsurge in Indian households, with their
increased purchasing power and more awareness about global market, is another factor
that has been encouraging foreign brands to invest in the Indian market. India has showed
a very bright growth prospect as far as the personal care industry is concerned and is at
the top position in the A.T Kearney’s Global Retail Developmental Index. Moreover,
French brands are known for their personal care and beauty products; all the more reason
why they should be flowing into India.

P&G set to enter Indian hair colour market

with Wella
New Delhi: Procter & Gamble India (P&G) is set to bring in one of its biggest global brands–
Wella hair colour—as it looks to strengthen its health and beauty business in India. This is the
first time that the detergents-to-diaper maker will enter the Indian hair colour market, which
is dominated by L’Oreal India’s L’Oreal Excellence Crème and Garnier, and Godrej Consumer
Products.
The brand, Wella Kolestint, will hit select retail outlets this weekend. A P&G spokeswoman
confirmed the development. “Yes, we are launching Wella Kolestint. This is in keeping with our
commitment of providing superior product propositions to our consumers.”
Analysts believe P&G’s entry into the hair colour category signals its new-found aggression in
India. Anand Shah, FMCG analyst at securities firm Angel Broking, said: “P&G has certainly
upped the ante in India.
Its entry into hair colour market could be a formidable one, and a likely threat to L’Oreal and
Godrej Consumer Products.” P&G’s closest rival, Hindustan Unilever (HUL), does not have a
presence in hair colour segment. Both HUL and P&G, however, compete aggressively in
shampoos with their respective brands Dove and Pantene.
In fact, speculation is rife that P&G will foray in the toothpaste category before year-end with
either its Crest or Oral-B brands, and compete directly against category leader Colgate.
The consumer products giant, which makes Tide detergent, Pampers diapers, Gillette shavers,
Olay skin-cream and Pantene shampoo, has a combined turnover of close to Rs 3,000-crore
turnover in India and operates through three subsidiaries — Procter & Gamble Health & Hygiene
(PGHH), Procter & Gamble Home Products (PGHP) and Gillette India.
The hair colour category is estimated at Rs 1,200 crore and growing at a healthy 25%. Apart
from L’Oreal, other brands in the category include Godrej Consumer Products’ Renew and
Revlon.
PPP&G had acquired German hair and beauty company brand Wella in 2003 in a $7 billion deal
which gave the former strategic access to the global professional hair care market. At that
time, P&G had topped German company Henkel’s bid for Wella. Wella is among the top two
global hair colour brands, after French brand L’Oreal.
The first hair colour brand to be developed in the world in 1950, the brand is likely to occupy
the mid-premium price range in India.

The brand is also known as Wella Koleston in markets like the US. Wella Professionals is
the leader in professional hair colour and service, and its range includes temporary to
semi -permanent and permanent hair colours.
