The legend below, together with the play descriptions should re-
move any confusion about the diagrams. Also, I recommend read-
ing The Ultimate Strategy Guide while learning these plays. It can
be very helpful.
LEGEND
1. A jagged line at the beginning of the route means block and
then release. Usually this is for one or two counts.
2. A route with no arrow means stop.
3. A route with an arrow means continue in that direction
4. This symbol means block. Hold it for as long as you can.
5. A dashed line coming from the QB is a pitch or shuffle pass.
6. A dashed line like this from a receiver indicates pre-snap motion.

Avalanche double tight

The Avalanche is a straight forward passing play. The


QB should read the middle defender. If he jumps on the
left receiver, the slant-fly should be open deep down
the middle. If he plays the deep ball, look for the right
receiver doing the shallow drag. The Center is the last
look.

Big Time twins

Big Time should blow open the deep ball with the double
move to the right inside receiver (to learn more about
the double move, read The Ultimate Strategy Guide). If
the middle defender drifts deep, hit the left wideout on a
slant. If the deep right defender jumps the double move,
hit the wide right receiver on a flag.

Black Widow trips

This play will tear apart a man defense. Either the quick
slant or the out will be open, and if the QB can lock his
eyes in on the quick slant route, he can probably deliver
the ball deep to the flag pattern.

Bottle Rocket Deep twins

Bottle Rocket Deep is a great play to test out their deep


coverage. Read the deep right defender. If he jumps the
curl, let it fly to the endzone. If he plays it deep, go curl.

Bounce twin tight

man

This play works well if you have run a crossing pattern


before. Instead of the twins right receivers crossing, they
bounce just before the meet, each cutting back outside.
If they are covered, look drag and then center release.

Hot Post twin tight

This play is a simple zone-buster, but it requires good tim-


ing. The inside Right receiver will sprint for the outside
shoulder of the deep defender. The Right wideout is go-
ing to pass the flat defender and then cut in on a short
post. As soon as he makes his cut, the QB should release
the ball. If for some reason, the middle defender is all
over the post, hit the left receiver on a hitch.

Mid - X double tight

The key to this play is the “Cross” in the middle of the


field between the left receiver and the inside right twins
receiver. They cross at different levels, the left receiver
under and the right, over. This forces the middle defend-
er to choose one or the other. Just hit whichever one he
leaves open. If he splits both, hit the short route. If the
deep right defender jumps the crossing route, hit the right
wideout on a fade for a touchdown.

Out & Up Trips

This play is one of the most beautiful in the entire book.


You will make more long completions using it than any
other. There are two keys, (1) giving the QB enough time
to make the long pass (2) the middle receiver’s route. The
middle trips receiver should take two steps and then cut
out. This has to happen fast to get the deep defender
to ignore him for the play. At 1-3 yards from the sideline,
the middle receiver should cut up field and turn on the
jets. The QB should keep his eyes on the far right receiver
until he’s ready to throw.

Post Stab Deep double tight

After the Out-and-Up, this will be among your best long


ball plays. The key is to keep the left receiver off the
radar screen until it’s too late. He should sprint hard
straight down field until he is almost as deep as the
deepest defenders, then he should cut across the field.
The deep right defender will jump the 15 yard out, leav-
ing the left receiver wide open.

Post Stab Middle double tight

Here, the middle defender is the read man. If he comes


up to cover the in, hit the far right receiver on the long
post. If he drops back, thread it underneath. The center
release is a last option.

Quick Pick twin back

This is a quick play that works great against man defense.


The right inside twin receiver goes in motion. As soon as
he passes center, snap the ball. His defender will be run-
ning with him probably lagging just a little behind. This
creates a shield for the back to use as he slips out into
the flat. QB should fire quickly.

Quick Silver double tight

Quick Silver uses the roll out to draw attention to the


right. The QB should further the effort by staring at one
of the two right receivers. Then the QB fires it at the right
blocker who has held his block for two counts and then
released. If possible, the center should block the middle
defender, but if he drifts right with the play, let him go.
The QB can deliver the ball

Quick Slant double tight

Need some short yardage? Use the quick slant to pick


up a couple. The QB should get rid of the ball as fast as
he possibly can. Practice moving the outside receiver in
or out to get the timing perfect.

Return To Sender twins

Return To Sender works in man coverage and hits the


receiver on a come-back. The first look is the right inside
twins receiver. The left wideout is the second look

Sling Shot twin back

Sling Shot can result in 6 for the offense if run right. The
key is to occupy the middle defender with the right wide-
out on a deep drag. By the time this defender picks up
on the running back, it will be too late.

Storm Surge trips

Storm Surge flusters man defenses. Look quick to the


inside receiver, or to the out route. Occassionally, the
deep flag will get open as well. The QB may want to roll
out on this play.

Time Bomb twin back

Time Bomb is all about timing and requires some prac-


tice. If you can get the timing down, this is a great play.
It works best against man defense, but can be used for
either. Send the HB in motion. on the snap he runs a
post, but three steps into his post, the QB throws the ball
outside. When he hits his third step, he plants back out
and runs up under the ball. If done right, it’s incredibly
hard to stop. The QB has to remember to put some loft
under the ball.

Trident Under twin back

Fairly straightforward play. Roll left and let it go. If the


middle defender is all over the center, hit the right re-
ceiver on a cross. If any of the deep guys jump the left
receiver on his drag, go deep.

Trips Arc trips

zone

This is a very effective play to pick up a few yards. The


trips receivers line up very close together (shoulder to
shoulder). They all run an identical arc, but at about 7
yards, the middle receiver stops short. The other two con-
tinue to run the arc, creating a shield for him. The ball
should be there as soon as the middle guy stops.

Trips Cross trips

Trips Cross uses some deception to get the right wide-


out open. He jogs at 50% while the other two receivers
sprint across the field (note: it is crucial that he actually
move at 50% - very hard to do), and when he gets 7-10
yards deep, he turns it on, cutting hard to the inside at
full speed. He should be forgotten about by the time he
starts running. The ball should be delivered right away.

Trips Flood trips

The key to Trips Flood is to send all the receivers across


the formation, and then hit the releasing center once he
gets outside. Again, if the QB can lock his eyes on one of
the dummy receivers, he will greatly increase the success
of this play.

Trips Middle trips

Trips middle appears similar to Trips Out at first look, but


here, the target receiver is the left wideout (1) instead
of the center. The center should wait 2 counts before
releasing. The middle receiver should draw off the flat
defender and the inside receiver should pull off the deep
defender leaving the 10 yard in wide open.

Trips Stack trips

man/ zone

Trips Stack looks odd. My guys were hesitant about it at


first, but it is a guaranteed 6 yards if run right. The prem-
ise is that, if three receivers are running exactly the same
route and the QB can hit any one of them, no defender
can stop the completion. The receivers must be stag-
gered as shown and should all follow the exact same cut,
each about 5 yards apart. The QB can deliver the ball to
any of the three.

Zig twin tight

man

Zig is a double-move pattern for both of the right receiv-


ers. It looks to the defenders as if they are going to cross,
but in fact they don’t. The defender guarding the out-
side receiver has a particularly hard job, since the mo-
ment they make a crossing motion, he will have to sprint
towards the middle of the field to keep up. Just then, the
outside receiver cuts it back outside, leaving the defend-
ers in a mess.

Zoning Out twins

This play is simple: pull the zone defenders away, and hit
the right blocker on a delayed slant. If the middle de-
fender fails to follow the slant-fly pattern, throw deep for
a touchdown.
