Crime Stoppers Partnership with Citizens Impressive in 2010

Citizens stepped up their involvement in anonymously reporting crimes to Crime Stoppers in 2010, resulting
in more anonymous tips, more arrests, more fugitives apprehended and more drugs and property confiscated.
“In 2010, thanks to citizens who phoned in anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers, more than $225,200 in
property and drugs were seized by local law enforcement,” Crime Stoppers Board President Galen Davis said.
“That compares to $21,800 seized in 2009. This clearly demonstrates the value of Crime Stoppers and the impact
it has in making Sedgwick County a safer place to live.”
Crime Stoppers received 1,500 tips through November 2010, compared to 1,429 in all of 2009. Also
through November 2010, tips to Crime Stoppers led to 75 arrests, 26 fugitives being captured and 34 cases being
cleared.
Among the more notable arrests made in 2010 was when an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers led to the
seizure of multiple pounds of methamphetamine with a street value of $120,000, a firearm and cash. Thanks to
another anonymous tip, a man was arrested for stomping on the head of another man who was drunk and lying
outside a local bar. Wichita Police detectives said the tip in that case was instrumental in the arrest of a suspect
who was charged with aggravated battery.
An anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers in July 2010 also resulted in the arrest of a man for two separate bank
robberies. In August 2010 another anonymous call resulted in the arrest of five people for aggravated battery,
felony theft and drug charges.
“Clearly, the Crime Stoppers program of allowing citizens to anonymously report criminal activity works,”
Davis said. “It is this successful partnership with citizens that helps make our community safer.”

Since Crime Stoppers began operating on June 15, 1980, the organization has received nearly 28,000 tips
and paid out almost $285,000 in rewards. Tips to Crime Stoppers since its inception have led to the seizure of more
than $5,000,000 in property and drugs, taken 41 weapons off the streets and cleared more than 3,400 cases.
“In all those years, Crime Stoppers has never once revealed the identity of those who have submitted tips,”
said Davis.
Crime Stoppers is a not-for-profit organization of citizens against crime and is funded by donations from the
public.
Citizens can anonymously report criminal activity to Crime Stoppers in three ways:
 By calling 316-267-2111
 By submitting an anonymous tip online at www.wsccs.com
 By sending a text message to the cell number CRIMES (274637) and beginning the text message
with TIP217.
