Idioms and English by the Book

Conversational English 2.0
Conversational English (CE) will look different
this year. We have brainstormed and prayerfully
planned as we must find ways to stay connected
with international and military families. Doing
nothing is not an option. For 41 years, CE has
shown God’s great love for the strangers who
come to the River Region. CE has welcomed and
helped them learn or improve English. Our goal
is to continue sharing God’s unchanging and
unstoppable love for everyone…even during a
pandemic.
Susan West Conversational English will have a once-monthly
Conversational English “drive-throughs” for families to pick up packets
Director of materials. The first drive-through is Thursday,
October 1, from 9:00-10:30 at the First Baptist
Church’s circular drive, between sanctuaries, on South Perry Street.
Students may request and receive a Bible in their heart language at the
drive-through and have an opportunity to purchase their textbook at this
time. The Hospitality Team, led by Mary Ruth Wolf, will prepare snack
bags for distribution each month. To assist families who cannot attend
the drive-through because they do not drive or have transportation, CE
volunteers will deliver the packets and snack bags to apartment
communities and homes.
Citizenship classes, taught by Bill Lambert, will be offered by in-person
using small group gatherings or via Zoom. The only requirement to
participate is that students must understand English. Students may email
Bill, billglambert@yahoo.com. Teaching teams will offer six Zoom
classes for beginners, intermediate and advanced level students. Our
classes will be taught using Zoom and will
use the Bible as their textbook. There are
plans for three small group gatherings in
homes this year for those residing in or
near Woodland Creek in Pike Road,
County Downs, and Hillwood.
Pray for:
• The many families who will attend the
drive-through and use the materials
• That churches will continue to provide hospitality and contributions
for Bibles
• Volunteers who deliver to front porches
• Relationship development and conversations
• Pray for those who will attend and host the meetings in these
neighborhoods
• Our teaching teams as they adapt and teach English in a different
format-May God give them extra energy when they need it most.
May the weight of their influence feel much heavier than this new
burden.

m1gh0oo805n8ncc/. An unexpected blessing of teaching English via
Zoom, instead of physically in classrooms on Thursday morning, is that
students may participate from home or anywhere. Families who have
returned to their countries or moved to a different part of the country can
now participate in online classes.
