1.0 INTRODUCTION:
The intent of this FPI CAD Standards is to provide a consistent 2D drawing
across projects and users. These standards set guidelines and procedures for
drawing management and output. Therefore, the FPI CAD Standards set manda-
tory procedures for the creation and delivery of all 2D architectural design and
construction drawings. As such, any proposed deviation from the FPI CAD
Standards shall first be discussed with the CAD Manager.
In principle, the FPI CAD Standards is based on the U.S. National CAD Standard
version 2.0 (NCS 2.0) and the CAD Layer Guidelines of the American Institute of
Architects (AIA).
1.1 SOFTWARE ENVIRONMENT:
This standard is developed for Autodesk AutoCAD 2004, users should set file
format as AutoCAD 2004 drawing format in the Tools menu >> Options >>
Open and Save tab >> File save >> Save as drop down list of AutoCAD.
R2 A CAD Standard file named “FPI CAD Standard.dws” is stored in “Architects:\
AutoCAD Reference\CAD Standards\Support” folder. This file should be used
to check CAD standard compliance of a drawing as well as migrate CAD stan-
dard from a previous standard version by using CAD Standard checking feature
available in AutoCAD 2004 under Tools menu >> CAD Standards.
1.2 TYPES OF CAD FILES:
MODEL FILES:
A model file, equivalent to AutoCAD ModelSpace, contains the graphics,
Always create a which describes a subset of a building’s geometry and its physical compo-
separate model nents: walls, doors, windows, columns, beams, outlets, ducts, etc. Most build-
file for each ings are described by a series of two-dimensional models: plans, elevations,
drawing. sections, and details.
Always create a separate model file for each drawing. Multiple plans, elevations
and sections should not be combined in one model file. Use sheet files to
combine floor plans with non-plan information or multiple elevations.
Wherever complexity of project demands generation of multiple part detail
drawings from a single file, base model files should be made containing only
R2 linework, without annotation. Each detail drawing shall then be generated in
seperate sheet files by external referencing the base model file.
SHEET FILES:
Sheet files, equivalent to AutoCAD PaperSpace, are used to assemble model
files, title blocks, and other information for plotting. A sheet file contains one or
more scaled views of one or more models arranged within a border, all annota-
tions, and title block.
A sheet file is a ‘ready-to-plot’ CAD file. Each sheet file contains the parameters
that will produce its corresponding plotted drawing, such as scale, layer visibil-
ity, and graphic appearance.
In case of complex projects as mentioned in last paragraph of ‘model files’
R2
section above, each sheet file will have all annotations and hatch in paper-
space and its modelspace will only have xref-ed linework from the base file.
2.0 FILE NAMES:
File naming convention shall follow a system as represented by the graphic

Drawing Sequence Number runs in a sequential order starting from 00 through
99. In floor plans it does not necessarily represent floor number.
An extra single digit Drawing Sequence Number Modifier (optional) may be
added to represent continuation sheets/drawings spread across multiple
sheets, starting at 0 through 9 with a ‘dot’ separating it from Drawing Number.
Eg. NNNNN_A_N.NN.N N_AN.dwg.

Revision Number: Sequential number from 0 through 9.

3.0 DRAWING SETUP:

3.1 DRAWING UNITS:
All drawings shall be setup in millimeters and decimal degrees for length and
angle respectively, with unit precision of upto two places of decimal.
3.2 SCALE:
All objects shall be drawn at full scale; except schedules, single line diagrams
and schematic diagrams which maybe drawn at any scale.
Recommended scales for plotting are as under:
1:2 1:5 1:10
1:20 1:50 1:100
R2 1:200 1:500 1:1000
1:2000 1:5000 1:10000
3.3 ORIGIN:
The origin of model files must be defined at coordinates 0,0,0 unless a project
specifically demands alignment with geographical coordinates. This is typically

left hand corner of the sheet border and set to coordinate 0,0,0.
3.4 ACCURACY:
Absolute drawing accuracy shall be maintained using appropriate tools inbuilt
into AutoCAD like Osnaps, Polar tracking and Orthographic mode. Snap mode
Purge and with appropriate snap spacing setting may be employed as required.
Overkill
For all drawing entities, zero tolerance is required: all lines should meet at

co-linear lines.
DRAWING LIMITS:
A compact drawing limit should be established and all objects restricted within
this. This aids in easy readability at ‘zoom extends’, screen regeneration, and
manipulation of the drawing.
ENTITY PROPERTIES:
Entity properties such colour and linetype shall be BYLAYER. For purposes of
clarity, certain entities like symbol and block properties may not be set
BYLAYER. However, this should be an exception rather than a rule.
3.6 SAVED STATE OF CAD FILES:
A drawing to be archived should be saved in the following state:
1. Set current layer to 0 (zero).

LINETYPE SCALE:
Linetype scale must be set so that each linetype is recognizable, easily identi-
fied, and distinguishable to individuals who are working on the model files as
well as in final plotted output.
System variables should be set to:
LTSCALE (same as ‘Format menu >> Linetype >> Global scale factor’)= 0.5 x
plot scale
LTSCALE = half of
PSLTSCALE = 0 (PaperSpace LineType SCALE)

PSLTSCALE = 0
CELTSCALE (for entire drawing in a single plot scale) = 1
CELTSCALE (for detail portion of drawing in a different scale) = plot scale x/plot
scale X, where Plot scale x = plot scale for detail portion of drawing, and
Plot scale X = plot scale for main drawing.

correctly. Thickness of lines is an important means of communicating information about
the design, and colours allow users to readily identify building components,
systems and type of information on a computer screen.
Assign lineweights to layers. The CTB table shows lineweights (pen assignment)
to be used for all FPI projects. It is based on colour dependent Autodesk Plot
Style Manager tables and is represented by “fpindia ___.ctb” file stored in
“Architects:\AutoCAD Reference\CAD Standards\Support” folder. Please note
that CTB table(s) have been totally revamped since the previous version.
R2
Seperate ctb files have been created for different ranges of plot scales so that a)
A layer will have
same colour in all A single file can be plotted in different scales with clarity, and b) All CAD files
drawings will be visually consistent irrespective of scale. ‘Fpindia 500.ctb’ is for large
irrespective of scale drawings, ‘fpindia 100.ctb’ is for standard scale drawings ranging from
scale. 1:50 to 1:200, and ‘fpindia 20.ctb’ is for detail drawings.

4.4 DIMENSIONS:
DIMENSION STYLE NAMES:
Dimension Style Names shall follow the format ‘Dim-XXXX’ where XXXX stands
for plot scale. For example: Dim-0005 for scale 1:5; Dim-0100 for scale 1:100.
DIMENSION STYLE SETTINGS: MODELSPACE
A sample dimension style is embedded in each template file located in
Architects:\CAD Standards\Support” folder. All settings are set within the style
and should not need altering; rename the style and enter the appropriate scale
under ‘Fit’ tab >> ‘Use overall scale of’ in DimStyle Setting dialog box.
All dimensions should update automatically when the distance they are measur-
ing change (associative dimensioning).
General settings for ‘dimstyle’, also preset in the template file (Use figures shown
within parenthesis where drawing congestion does not allow normal dimension
sizes):
Lines and Arrows Tab:
Dimension lines >> Extend beyond ticks = 1.0, Baseline spacing = 5.0
Extension lines >> Extend beyond dim lines = 0.5, Offset from origin = 0.5
Arrowheads >> 1st, 2nd = arch. tick or closed filled, leader = closed filled, arrow size = 1.25 (or 1.0)
Centre marks >> Type = mark, size = 1.5

Fit Options >> Always keep text between ext lines Text Placement >> Beside the dimension line
Scale for dimension features >> Use overall scale of = “enter plot scale in mm” (modelspace dim only)
Fine tuning >> Always draw dim line between ext lines.
DIMENSION STYLE SETTINGS: PAPERSPACE
R2 METHOD 1 (preferred): Dimension style name: Dim-0001-PS. There will be a
single Dimension Style for all viewport scales. All settings under ‘Lines and
DIMLFAC = 1 Arrows’ and ‘Text’ tabs are same as shown above for modelspace dimensions.
DIMASSOC = 2 Set DIMLFAC = 1 (or -1) (DIMension Linear FACtor system variable)
Set DIMASSOC = 2 (DIMension ASSOCiative system variable)

4.5 ANNOTATION EXAMPLES:

4.6 XREF (EXTERNAL REFERENCE) FILES:

The number of xrefs attached to a drawing should be kept to bare minimum for
ease of use and should ideally reside in the same folder as the parent file.
Xref-ed files should be bound to parent file before archiving parent file.
4.7 ATTRIBUTES AND BLOCKS:
Attributes may be used to store data in the drawing. However, do not use
attributes to store large amounts of data in a drawing.
Any graphic entity that occurs repeatedly in drawings should be made into a
block. Do not block the entire drawing or large portions of the drawing. Do not
define a block out of another block.
Use a logical insertion point for blocks (center of circle, bottom left corner of
object, etc.). Nested blocks contain more than one block definition; this should
be avoided.
When creating a When defining or redefining a block always ensure that:
block, ensure (a) all object entities that will make up a block are residing in layer 0
that All entities (b) these entities have colour and linetype ‘bylayer’ unless intended not to
are in layer 0 and
inherit colour and linetype bylayer, and
Current layer is 0.
(c) the current layer is 0 .
This way the block inherits the properties of the layer on which it is inserted.
When inserting block, always verify that the current layer is the correct one
where the block should normally reside. Do not insert blocks on layer 0.
Use logical and descriptive block names; keep it simple yet systematic. Use
hierarchical block naming system starting from the generic and going forward to
specific. Examples:
Furn_sofa_2seater D2_FRP_FRP_900 Elect_Light_FBH405_2x18W
Furn_sofa_1seater D1_Al_Flush_1000 Elect_Fan_900

6.0 LAYER STANDARD AND GUIDELINE
This Layer Standard and Guideline is based on ‘The CAD Layer Guidelines’ of
the American Institute of Architects, which also form part of the larger National
CAD Standard (NCS) of the USA.
Layer names are alphanumeric and use abbreviations that are easy to remember.
It is organized in groups that follow a hierarchy.
The following example details the methodology behind the layer naming

A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A

convention and their general use.

A-WALL Layer name with Discipline Code and Major Group:

A-WALL-PATT Layer name with Discipline Code, Major Group and
Minor Group: Architectural Wall Hatch layer
6.1 EXPLANATION OF GROUPS:
COMPANY CODE:
Company Code is optional and project specific.
DISCIPLINE CODE:
Discipline is the primary method of classification for layer names. It identifies the
author of the graphic information.
It is a mandatory one-character or two-characters field where the first character
identifies the author of the graphic information and the second character, if
present, represents a graphic component from another discipline. For example,
a structural column placed by an architect or residing in an architectural drawing
will be in a layer named ‘AS-COLS’.
MAJOR GROUP:
The Major Group designation identifies the building system. This is also a man-
datory field; it must always contain exactly four characters.
MINOR GROUP:
The Minor Group designation further differentiates the Major Groups. This is an
optional field; it must always contain exactly four characters.
MINOR GROUP MODIFIER:
The Minor Group Modifier designation further differentiates the Minor Groups.
This is an optional field; it must always contain exactly four characters.
STATUS FIELD:
The Status Field is an optional one-character designator. It is needed only when
phases of work must be differentiated. Status Field always come last, in shorter
layer names it is possible that status field is the third or fourth field. In certain
cases, this field may (need to) be extended to more than one character.

6.3 ANNOTATION LAYERS
Annotation comprises text, dimensions, sheet borders, detail references and
other elements in a CAD drawing that do not represent physical aspects of a
building. The Major Group ‘ANNO’ designates Annotation.
Annotations can be placed in both model and paper space. The following
table lists the various annotation layers and recommended ‘space’ in which it
should reside:
A-ANNO-DIMS Dimensions
A-ANNO-KEYN Keynotes; to identify building materials and systems
A-ANNO-LABL Label; to identify rooms, areas, etc.
A-ANNO-LEGN Legends and Schedules
A-ANNO-NOTE General drawing notes

A-ANNO-REVS Revision tags and clouds
A-ANNO-SYMB Symbols
A-ANNO-TEXT Title block text, only in paper space
A-ANNO-TTLB Title block linework, only in paper space
A-ANNO-VPRT Viewport (non-plotting), only in paper space
Texts in layer A-ANNO-LABL shall be set to ARIAL font of not less than 2.5mm
plotted height (Refer section on Texts and Annotation Standard).
6.4 LAYERS FOR SECTIONS AND ELEVATIONS:
Special Groups of layers within each discipline are defined for Sections and
Elevations as Major Groups. Please note that for the purpose of this standard,
elevation does not refer to three-dimensional drawing and view.
6.5 LAYER GROUP CODES/ABBREVIATIONS:
The following tables show a list of codes/abbreviations for various disciplines
and groups. These codes may be added to a drawing as necessary in its’
respective group(s). New codes shall be developed for any item not repre-
sented in this list while keeping in mind the following rules:
1. New abbreviations not based on any existing standard shall conform to
number of characters specific to a group, shall not duplicate names already
specified, and shall be easily understandable.
2. For architectural cad layer names, refer to ‘AIA CAD Layer Format.pdf’
saved in the Architects server:\AutoCAD Reference\CAD Standards’ folder.
FPI CAD Standards v2 18
Hard copies of various CAD standards are also kept in a separate file folder.
3. For other services line mechanical, plumbing, etc. refer to the SMACNA
CAD standard.
