Week 1

MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY

 Determine meanings of words through structural analysis

OBJECTIVES
1. Classify words according to the components of structural analysis
2. Use structural analysis to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words
3. Form new words using structural analysis
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Structural analysis can most easily be defined as the use of word parts to help determine the
meaning and pronunciation of words. It is a powerful vocabulary tool since knowledge of a few
word parts can give you clues to the meanings of a large number of words. Although the
meaning suggested by the word parts may not be exact, this process can often help you
understand the word well enough that you can continue reading without significant interruption.

When using structural analysis, the reader breaks words down into their basic parts:
a. Prefixes – word parts located at the beginning of a word to change meaning
b. Roots – the basic meaningful part of a word
c. Suffixes – word parts attached to the end of a word; suffixes often alter the part of
speech of the word

The components of structural analysis are:

1. Compound words - are usually defined as words made up of two or more other words
2. Affixes - are one or more letters attached to the beginning or ending of a base word
3. Contractions - are shortened by replacing a letter or letters with an apostrophe
