Finding a Job as a Dietitian

Results of a 2006 New Graduate Survey

If you’re considering a career as a dietitian, you’ll be interested to know that Dietitians of Canada
(DC) regularly surveys the employment status of new graduates. Our 2006 survey of graduates,
at one year after graduation, shows that:

● new graduates are finding employment very quickly;


● the majority are working in clinical or community-based settings;
● a high percentage are finding full-time employment as dietitians; and
● a significant number are finding jobs using technology such as the Internet and
email.

How long does it take to find a dietitian’s job?

Within one year of graduation, almost 95% of new graduates are employed. Over 90% of the
positions they find are related to dietetics. On average, it takes just under 2 months for new
graduates to find their first job as a dietitian. In fact, 47% are employed before they graduate
from their educational/training programs.

Where are dietitians finding jobs and are they full-time?

Just over 40% of new graduates are employed in general or acute care hospitals.
About 25% are gaining employment in community-based settings. Less than 10% find
employment in business or are self-employed. Almost 75% of new graduates are employed full-
time, and the majority are working in one versus many positions. For 45% of new graduates,
employment is gained by moving from their location of training. Over 85% are employed in urban
centres.

What types of positions are dietitians working in?

About 60% of new graduates are working in clinical practice. The remainder find employment as
dietitians in the community, public health, home care, education, sales and administrative
dietetics.
How are new graduates finding employment?

For 50% of new graduates, the Internet and email are important methods of finding a job. Just
under 40% gain employment by networking. In addition, university or internship contacts, as well
as print media, are useful job search tools.

How much money are new graduates earning?

Most new graduates are satisfied with the annual salary they are earning. The following graph
reveals their salary levels (based on 1950 hours/year).

Employers are also very satisfied with new graduates’ knowledge and skills, personal suitability,
and experience. In fact, 100% of employers surveyed say they would hire the same individual
again
