Designers for Darfur

Designers for Darfur was founded in 2006 by fashion designer Malcolm Harris (Mal Sirrah,
Inc.) and co-chaired by model/heiress Lydia Hearst (Hearst Corporation). In association with
Fashion Television and The Save Darfur Coalition, Designers for Darfur was launched via an
unprecedented charity fashion show held on February 9, 2007 (the climax of New York
Fashion Week) at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City.

Since its launch Designers for Darfur continues to hold periodic and strategic events as well as
spearhead key initiatives in their commitment of keeping the spotlight firmly on the crisis in
Darfur. Designers for Darfur has now come to represent hundreds of international designers,
artists and the wider creative community collectively banding together to show their
commitment and solidarity towards ending the atrocity of genocide currently taking place in
Darfur.

MORE ABOUT the Save Darfur Coalition and the Crisis in Darfur

Around the country and across the globe, the Save Darfur Coalition is inspiring action, raising
awareness and speaking truth to power on behalf of the people of Darfur. Working with world
leaders, we are demanding an end to the genocide, and our efforts are getting results.

Save Darfur Coalition utilizes media outreach, public education, targeted coalition building
and grassroots mobilization to persuade policymakers and other decision-makers in the
United States and abroad in an effort to help and save the people of Darfur.

According to recent estimates, at least 500,000 people have died in Darfur since
the genocide began in February of 2003. It is impossible to know what the final
number will be, however, as the genocide is still taking place today. What is
known is that there are approximately 3.5 million men, women and children in
the western Darfur region of Sudan trying to survive the Sudanese government-
sponsored campaign of violence and forced starvation. These innocent victims
are essentially on life support, their continued existence dependent on U.S. and
international humanitarian aid and the presence of African Union peacekeepers.
Despite the best efforts of the under-funded and under-manned African Union
peacekeeping force, attacks have increased in recent months, leading to tens of
thousands of new arrivals at refugee camps in Darfur and across the border in
Chad.
