5. In a 4- stroke petrol engine, the exhaust value opens 400 before the top dead centre
and closes 150 after bottom dead center. The value has a lift of 10mm. The least
radius of the circular arc type cam operating a flat-faced follower is 22mm. The nose
radius is 3mm.The camshaft rotates at 1500 rpm. Calculate the maximum velocity of
the value and the minimum force exerted by the spring to overcome the inertia of the
moving parts that weigh 200g.

which a safe operating tension of 1000 N has been laid down. Speed of both the
pulleys is 180 rpm. Assuming coefficient of friction as 0.25, determine the diameters
of the pulleys and number of ropes when the power transmitted is 140 kW. The drive
is designed for maximum power conditions and the pulleys are equal size

b) An epicyclic gear train consists of a pinion, a wheel of 40 teeth and an annulus
with 84 internal teeth concentric with the wheel. The pinion gears with the annulus.

c) State the conditions to be satisfied in a double Hooke’s joint in order to provide a

rpm. Determine the maximum permissible angle between the shafts.
