Introduction
INTRODUCTION:

The International Criminal Police Organization, commonly known as INTERPOL,

is an international organisation that facilitates worldwide police cooperation and crime
control.

Interpol’s effectiveness is limited by the fact that it resulted from a practical

agreement between police forces rather than from an official convention between
states. Interpol can act only within the framework of national laws; criminals can be
returned only if an extradition treaty is in force and the offender is a national of the
country requesting return. Moreover, because Interpol’s operations depend crucially on
the exchange of intelligence, countries that cannot afford efficient intelligence databases
cannot contribute significantly to the organization.
In the early 21st century, Interpol was no longer the only international policing
organization. This module will further discuss the different international organization and
their role to the public.

MAIN TOPIC:

INTERPOL has 194 member countries, making us the world's largest police
organization. They work together and with the General Secretariat to share data related
to police investigations.
Each country hosts an INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB), which links
national police with our global network.  Countries come together at our annual General
Assembly to decide policy, working methods, finances and activities. In addition, heads
of NCB meet annually at a conference to share experiences.

The current emblem of Interpol was adopted in 1950 and comprises the following
elements :

• The globe indicates worldwide activity

• The olive branches represent peace

• The sword represents police action

• The scales signify justice

INTERPOL is the International Criminal Police Organization, created in 1923 as

the International Criminal Police to further cross-border cooperation when it came to
solving crimes. It aims to get investigations over jurisdictional hurdles even when
countries do not have diplomatic relations with one another. INTERPOL is completely
apolitical and is headquartered in Lyons, France. The money for operations comes from
the member states.

The Interpol is comprised of the following bodies:

1. General Assembly
2. Executive Committee
3. General Secretariat
4. National Central Bureaus
5. Advisers
6. The Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files
