2 As excitement for GATCOʼs 20th Anniversary grew,

we knew we had to do something special for our
friends and customers in the knife community who
made this event possible. We went to longtime friend
and legendary custom knife maker, Russ Kommer, to
design a special knife that would befit this important
occasion and provide discerning sportsmen and
collectors with a unique piece of “knife art.”

As a premier knife and tool developer and manufacturer, GATCO® recognizes

the skill of numerous African tribes for creating sturdy and functional tools for
survival and protection.
1) Knife with sheath: Made by the San (Bush-
man) in the Kalahari Desert. Used by these
hunter-gatherers to kill and skin animals they
have hunted as well as protection from large
animals and general survival duties.
2) Axe: Made in Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, by
the Mashona Tribe. They are the dominant
tribe in the region. The axe is used for general
farming duties like cutting down trees as well
as cutting up carcasses of large animals.
3) Spear: Central Africa. This spear, from Zambia,
is used on large game such as Kudu and
Eland. Mostly used to dispatch large animals
that have been trapped, snared or surrounded.

Sharpening System

includes a coarse silicon carbide stone for

How to Sharpen with an Arkansas Stone
1. Apply a small amount of honing oil on the stone. Tilt your
knife at an approximate 20° angle with the cutting edge
facing away from you.
2. Push the knife away from you, maintaining the 20° angle.
Repeat that stroke two or three times.
3. Turn the knife over so the cutting edge faces you. Tilt the
knife again at approximately 20° and draw the blade to-
ward you. Repeat that stroke two or three times.
IMPORTANT: Take the same number of strokes on each
side of the knife. Push and draw blade as though you
were trying to shave a thin slice off the stone. Clean the
stone under running water or wipe off the oil with a cloth.
