HH Series
HH Series hydraulic hoist series
The drilling industry is actively involved in developing new technologies to solve common problems, such as increasing safety in drilling
operations and minimizing environmental impact. Together with these considerations relating to nature and human resources, the industry
must also continue improving drilling performance.
The history of the HH rigs sees its evolution from a simple hydraulic rig for water wells upgraded to oil well standards in 1993.
Later on, a new project developed the basic concept of this technology and a new drilling rig series began to operate in various oil fields
around the world.
Today more than a hundred of these rigs are successfully operating worldwide.
The complete series of the HH rigs ranges from 100 to 350 ton hook load capacity. Fast moving features provide an efficient tool to the
drilling contractors, enabling them to drill quickly and safely.
The flexibility of the HH design means high rate of utilization because 90 % of onshore wells are within the range of capability of the
HH series.

HH Series hydraulic hoist series
The unusual characteristics of HH Rigs design make their shape far different from the one of a conventional rig. The HH Rigs were
designed to achieve high levels of safety and outstanding performance. They integrate various hydraulic equipments in a drilling process
that is largely automated and has all drilling functions centrally controlled from a comfortable and air conditioned drillers cabin.
The most evident characteristic of the HH Rigs is the self erecting hydraulic telescopic mast made of one powerful hydraulic cylinder. It
has an integrated hydraulic Top Drive built in. It is a self-standing telescopic mast with reduced height suitable to handle range 3
"supersingles".
The drilling parameters can be controlled by the driller from a control panel, which allows automatic drilling with a constant wob and
constant rpm. Predetermined limits of over-pull can also be set. Such features coupled with the back reaming allowed by the top drive,
considerably reduce the risk of stuck pipes.
The top drive is equipped with a torque wrench; it has a horizontal displacement capability, that allows it to move the pipes from the
centre hole to the mouse hole and vice versa. The top drive interfaces with an automatic pipe handler that rotates inside a unique vertical
pipe racking that surround the rig floor.
The pipe racking is made of a number of mobile bins, whose number varies with the size of the HH rig.
The arms of the pipe handler are installed on a vertical rotating tower; they have two clamps that take the drill pipes from any vertical
pipe rack line and transfer them to the mouse hole or vice versa, depending on an electronically pre-set order for tripping in or out.
The vertical pipe racking system is assembled in a semi-circular array around the rig floor; it contributes to quick rig up and rig down.
Furthermore the containers can be transported and handled full of drill pipes, with considerable saving in time and reduction of the risk
connected with the pipe handling on the rig.
The hydraulic power tong is another main element that allows an unmanned rig floor activity of the HH Rigs; it is stored in the
back of the fixed part of the mast base. Its adjustable in height and driven from the drilling console, rotating back and forth from the
centre hole, to break or to make up connections, with no need of manual intervention.
The overall dimensions of the HH Rigs are much smaller than the conventional rigs of corresponding power.
All the major rig modules are permanently mounted on semi-trailers and are self erecting for fast and safe moving between locations.
Much less loads than those of a comparable conventional rig are needed.
On an HH Rig, with a smaller crew and most part of the routine activities made by automatic or remotely controlled equipment and
an unmanned rig floor, the possibility of casualties is dramatically reduced. The very small number of recorded accidents, even if of very
limited importance, clearly shows that the activity on the HH Rigs is always done at the highest possible level of safety for the entire
crew.
The automated systems, the central control and the reduced number of people, allow for an easier and more effective handling of the
rig, with very beneficial effects on the overall performance and costs.
The emphasis on safety of the unique design of the HH Rigs, is achieved mostly by an extensive automation of a large number of
their components. It can be enhanced further to reach full automation and to cancel almost entirely the manual work on the rig floor.
It appears the right way to finally reach zero accident in the land drilling industry.

Environmental care
The HH rigs are designed to avoid any fluid spill from the drill floor, mud tanks, generators and ancillary equipment. This allows the rig
to drill in dry locations in accordance with the ISO 14000 rules, with enhanced control on environmental pollution.
Training
The latest generation of virtual reality simulators are available at Drillmec facilities for training. They allow the customer's personnel to
familiarize with the HH Rigs and to learn how to run them, even before going on an actual rig.
