Rationale
In the 21st century nursing, the role of the nurse as a researcher is required. It is because he/she has to practice the profession safely effectively
& efficiently. In doing so, evidence-based performance of this responsibility& its associated functions is imperative. Research serves as the vehicle
by which this can be complied with. Hence, it is essential to formalize the student nurses’ knowledge, skills & attitude on research at this level.
Apart from integrating research findings into their practice in the lower years, this time, they are required to undertake the research process itself.
At the minimum, they are expected to gain more knowledge, develop skills & appreciate the process as they are honed to perform their role as a
beginning nurse researcher.

Course Description
This is an introductory course intended to equip the nursing students with concepts and principles in research starting from an overview of the
major phases of the research process. The course will include discussions from formulation of research problem to the selection of the research
design and planning and choosing the appropriate research tools for data gathering. This course will require the student group to present a
research proposal in a colloquium with the application of knowledge and demonstration of skills and attitude in the conceptual, design and
planning phases of the research process.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES
1. Apply knowledge of physical, social, natural and health sciences, and humanities in the practice of nursing
2. Apply guidelines and principles of evidence-based practice in the delivery of care
3. Practice nursing in accordance with existing laws, legal, ethical and moral principles

maladaptive patterns of behavior in varied healthcare settings, the learners demonstrate safe, appropriate and holistic care utilizing the
nursing process and applying research and evidence-based practice.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Apply the phases of the nursing research process in developing a research proposal.
2. Determine if the research problems / questions / hypotheses are clearly linked to the research purpose.
 Identify a researchable problem
 Specify the research variables
 State the hypotheses correctly
3. Analyzes if the summary of review of related literature are logically linked with the research purpose, problems/questions,and
hypotheses.
4. Reviews research literature to determine knowledge on the topic of interest to identify context and justify the need for the study.
5. Develop a theoretical framework or create a conceptual model to provide an organizing framework for the research study.
6. Analyzes if the conceptual framework are logically linked with the research purpose, problems/questions,and hypotheses.
7. Explains if the concepts in the framework are clear and consistent with the operational Definition
8. Determine and formulates with the research team the research design, specifying the sample and setting, data collection methods and
tools, data analysis procedures and plan for data interpretation / synthesis and presentation
9. Integrate lifelong learning through Nursing Research by giving opportunities to develop researches individually and by group with
supervision of experienced researchers.
10. Provide opportunities to improve and collaborate with other multidisciplinary sectors in developing techno-intelligent care
systems and processes in nursing research that adheres to the nursing core values.
