Will Different Sizes and

Brushpiles Affect Fish Use?

any vegetation. The point to make here is that, as reservoirs

continue to age, maintaining adequate habitat for sport fish
will be increasingly more dependent on introductions of
materials.
Various materials (natural trees and bushes, tires, PVC
structures, etc.) are often planted in reservoirs to increase cover
availability and concentrate fish, which increases angler catch
rates. In general, previous studies have shown that natural, woody
cover attracts more fish. Furthermore, size of fish attracted is
typically related to the complexity of the brush. Larger fish tend to
prefer bigger diameter trunks and limbs, whereas smaller fish are
more attracted to brushpiles with smaller and more closely spaced
limbs. However, few studies have actually examined how brushpile
size and configuration affects fish attraction relative to species,
size, and time of the year.
TPWD is conducting a one-year, brushpile research project
at Lake Striker, a habitat poor reservoir located in Rusk County.
We are introducing brushpiles of three different sizes (4, 8, and
16 trees) and two configurations (straight line and circular).
These brushpiles will be sampled using our electrofishing boat,
and we will determine whether these different configurations
attract different species, greater overall abundance, or
different sizes of fish. Fish will be sampled during all seasons
to see if results change throughout the year. Although the
introduction of brushpiles will have immediate impacts on

It seems every year the weather turns bitterly
cold the day of the Derby, but this year the
participants and the crowd enjoyed overcast skies,
temps in the 50’s and almost no wind.
Many of the participants had their own rods

needed some.
Weigh stations were set up at each end of the
pond, and kids excitedly brought their catches to
the scales to be tallied. There was no catch too

Draper & Marks win V&M/Cylclone Baits

tournament on Rayburn with nearly 30 pounds!
By Patty Lenderman / Lakecaster Managing Editor

Bayou Outdoors hosted their first Sam Rayburn tour event January 15, 2011 and Big Sam produced
a 29.15 lb sack to win the event. Richard Draper & Phil Marks took 1st place in this new tournament
trail that paid back over 25% of the field.
Bayou Outdoors, the makers of V&M and Cyclone baits, is hosting several circuits this year to not only
help promote their lures but give an affordable opportunity for anglers to compete. Each entrant receives
a $50 voucher for V & M and Cyclone baits to use at their favorite bait dealers.
The first team to weigh in was Chris McCall and Tommy Dickerson, weighing 25.49 lbs and setting the
mark to beat. Soon after, Richard Draper and Phil Marks came in carrying their 5 fish limit that tipped
the scales to 29.15 pounds, winning 1st place. Choosing their biggest bass to weigh individually was not
an easy task as they had a few chunks to pick from. Their biggest tallied in at 7.34 lbs, the biggest bass of
the day. Strike King lipless crank baits as well as square billed cranks were the key to success for this team
to win the first Rayburn tournament of the season.
“Team Tackle Monkey”, McCall and Dickerson hit the grass near creeks in 2’-6’ of water with rattle
traps and Santone football head jigs. “We had a small limit in the boat by 9am, then hit a lull. Between
10:45 and 11:15 we loaded up on several in the five pound range, and thought we would have enough
to win so left our spots alone for future events.” Still a good finish at 2nd place, the team would like
to thank Ranger, Evinrude, Berkley, Santone Lures, Gambler, Abu Garcia, and a prototype of Tour One
Rods they were using for their support.
3rd place was won by Clayton Boulware and Chess Adams with 18.62 lbs. “I fished a little different
than I normally do and concentrated on structure” Boulware reported. Targeting stump fields along
creek bends, the team used a combination of football head jigs, DD22’s and Stanley Swim Jigs for
their creel. “We caught our big one (7.07#) first thing in the morning. After that it was one here and
one there until the end of the day.” They had one in the four pound range spit the bait at them while
bringing it in that would have helped their overall weight. The team would like to thank Nitro, Mercury, Richard Draper shows the twins that anchored a 1st place win for himself and partner
MotorGuide, V&M, Cyclone, Stanley, Dusty Rhodes Marine, H & H Rods, and the “Pit Crew” – Phil Marks. These two weighed 6.44 and 7.34 respecively, winning Big Bass honors with
the latter. Adding their other three, their total weight was 29.15 lbs for a 1st place finish
(Mom, Dad & Wife) for their help and support.

NickName
Many people go by an alternate name other than the one given to them at birth.
But where did the term come from?
Like modern parents, some parents of bygone eras gave their babies long names. They At the heart of Toledo Bend & Sam Rayburn
abbreviated the names for ordinary use, so that young Williams were called Will. Since they
were bestowed in childhood, such shortened names were usually called a “nurse name.” Fishing Capitol of the World!
Sometimes an adult retained his nurse name or was given a special name because
of some prominent trait or quality. Such a name attached to him over and above his
baptismal name. So it was called an ekename, from the Saxon for “also.”
Slurred over in common speech, an ekename became a nekename and finally a
nickname, the “also name” which the gang bestows upon Alfred or Franklin to make
him “Red” or “Buddy.”

NISSAN OF SILSBEE
Excerpts from Webb Garrison’s
What’s in a Word?
X for Kiss
Our custom of putting Xs at the end of letters to symbolize kisses grew out of
3480 Highway 96 Bypass medieval legal practices. In order to indicate good faith and honesty, the sign of
(409) 299-3221 Saint Andrew was placed after the signature on all important documents. This sign
is quite like the letter x.
Contracts and agreements were not considered binding until each signer added
visit us on the web at www.silsbeenissan.com
Saint Andrew’s cross after his name. Then he was required to kiss it to guarantee

We’re Makin’ Deals, The Silsbee Way! the faithful performance of his obligations.
Over the centuries the origin of the ceremony was forgotten. People associated
x with the kiss instead of the pledge of good faith, and the modern custom was
born.
Adding to that, indicating hugs, the O was adopted to symbolize wrapping one’s
arms around another. Today, letters signed with Xs and Os represents ones affection
to another.
Don’t forget your sweetheart on Valentines Day February 14th!
