Safety and Security in healthcare

Patient protection is critical and cannot be undervalued and neither can occupation security

for nurses. This is as a result of the risk areas for nurses in healthcare such as conditions

linked to patient management, aggression, airborne diseases and slips and falls. These safety

issues are important because nurses need safe environment while attending to patients

(Weiss, Tappen, & Grimley, 2019). This affects the complication inpatients, length of stay,

rates of readmission and death rates.

Weiss, Tappen, & Grimley (2019) study found out those nurses spend more time at

work than at home and aggressive colleagues can make their employment life miserable.

Instead of waiting for an executive to observe the dilemma, it is vital to be in charge of the

circumstances as fast as possible to keep the environment pleasant. This can be done by

tracking aggressive incidents and filing them, talking to the colleague in undisclosed area and

asking a supervisor to intervene if the colleague is mean by nature and reporting with the

company's human resources manager if the hostile situation continues.

Alcohol and substance abuse by nurses put patients, the community, and professionals

themselves at risk for severe damage or death. Specialized evaluation programs that use a

substitute-to-punishment strategy are effective in the management of health experts who are

addicted and are a paradigm for healing (Weiss, Tappen, & Grimley,2019). To help a

colleague with this problem, it is essential to approach them indirectly because approaching

them directly leads to tension. It is also important to talk to the administration about your

suspicions and offer proof to back up the allegations.

Whereas the healthcare profession encompasses a variety of jobs, all in the

profession share certain dangers that increase the chances of injury. Some of the injury in the

healthcare field conditions linked to patient handling; aggression; blood-borne pathogens;

airborne diseases and slips, and falls. Nurses are central to patients’ and providers’ safety.

They can help further safe patient handling programs in their institutions by starting the

conversation with colleagues and leadership (Weiss, Tappen, & Grimley,2019). All hospitals

should employ the utilization of engineering controls, lifting and transfer aids by employees

to perform the acts of carrying, transferring and relocating patients.

According to Weiss, Tappen, & Grimley (2019), sexual harassment consists of any

unwanted oral or bodily behaviour that builds an aggressive employment environment.

Examples include: sending sexually inappropriate photos or videos, sending evocative

comments or e-mails, improper sexual gestures and touching others inappropriately. Various

steps that can be taken to counter harassment include developing a clear sexual harassment

strategy, clear strategy on exposure and corrective action and training suitable workers.

Managers should embrace the subject in their orientation, instruction and learning

programmes of workers.

The latex policy states that Latex attentive patients will be supervised in a secure

setting in an attempt to reduce danger of sensitivity. Instant latex reaction safety measures

include: removing all latex gloves and replacing them with non-sterilized latex free gloves

and removing all objects that have latex (Weiss, Tappen, & Grimley, 2019). Violence in the

workplace policy seeks to notify workers about workplace aggression and ask them to report

untimely signs or coercion. It offers workers with a secure work environment where joint

respect is given. The needle stick guidelines on the other hand aims at ensuring that all

workers who might be exposed to infected body fluids and blood get instant treatment or

support (Weiss, Tappen, & Grimley, 2019).

There are various concepts that are essential for the registered nurse. First, the nurse

should identify and employ her knowledge and expertise to offer better results. Besides,

registered nurses should make decisions independently about the best practices to employ to

guarantee security and high quality patients’ outcomes (Weiss, Tappen, & Grimley, 2019).

Lastly, they should be responsible for their deeds and the resultant outcomes.

Drug abuse is an outbreak that has affected healthcare experts. Professionals with this

condition have impaired judgement and slow response times, which affect their work

outcome. They may hurt themselves, patients and the field of healthcare. Co-occurring

conditions, for instance hopelessness and genetics lead to drug abuse. Additionally, nurses

frequently work long shifts that are emotionally and physically arduous (Weiss, Tappen, &

Grimley, 2019). This offers little time to decompress. The most commonly abused drugs

include alcohol and painkillers, such as fentanyl.

Weiss, Tappen, & Grimley (2019) study found that nurses are the major set of

hospital specialists who should enjoy a fulfilling quality of work life for them to attend to

patients well. Nurses have been educated to care for and improve the life of patients.

However, their own work life quality requirements have been neglected. This in turn leads to

high levels of employee turnover, poor results, and absenteeism and high levels of

dissatisfaction.

Emergency in the healthcare profession involves a situation where nurses take care of

patients who are in critical conditions. Nurses in this section have a variety of skills acquired

through constant professional advancements (Weiss, Tappen, & Grimley, 2019). Due to the

critical condition of patients, nurses in this area should be experts at quick, correct physical

examination, utilization of advanced equipment and be able to recognize the condition in

patients early. They must be able to perform their tasks separately and proficiently. Nurses

should also cooperate with other professionals at all levels of disasters. Besides they should

educate patients to plan for and stay protected and make their plans and that of their families

during these emergencies.
