TECHNICAL INFORI PRECAUTIONS DURING GTE MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION APPLICATION All 7F and 9F hydrogen cooled leads up generators with GTE compartments PURPOSE To inform users to take precautionary measures when opening GTE compartment doors for maintenance and when installing additional equipment inside the GTE compartment BACKGROUND DISCUSSION At one of the sites, a GTE compartment door lifted off its hinges, when a man lift bumped against the door. At a different site, a flashover occurred with an inappropriate installation of extra equipment inside the GTE compartment. The equipment was installed without taking into account the minimum clearances for insulation. This TIL is to recommend preventive measures to avoid similar issues on other sites. RECOMMENDATIONS GE recommends the following safety precautions ‘when opening the GTE compartment doors. ‘© Secure the doors with wind bars, so that they do ‘not swing into the man lift. © Secure the area under/near the GTE compartment restricting access to unnecessary personnel. © Ensure that the man lif, or any other mean(s) used to access the GTE compartment, does not interfere with the operation of the doors in any way. TW 1427-2 GE ENERGY SERVICES PRODUCT SERVICE 30 JUNE 2003 ER GE recommends getting prior approval from Product Service, before adding any equipment inside the GTE compartment (e.g.: Potential Transformers [PTs], Current Transformers [CTs], etc).
