‘ 10 features that make English people different

Britain is full of culture and traditions which have been around for hundreds of years.
British customs and traditions are famous all over the world. When people think of
Britain they often think of people drinking tea, eating fish and chips and wearing bowler
hats, but there is more to Britain than just those things. They have English and British
traditions of sport, music, food and many royal occasions. There are also songs, sayings
and superstitions.

Take-away meals are very popular and most towns have a selection of Indian, Italian,
Chinese and Greek Restaurants. You will also find Mcdonalds, Burger King and Subway.
Fish and chips is the classic English take-away food and is the traditional national food of
England. It became popular in the 1860's when railways began to bring fresh fish straight
from the east coast to the their cities over night.

Learning from the media and talking to older people, they picked up a lot of stereotypes
about other nations, the first stereotype that comes in our mind when we hear about
“England” or “the English” is a typical Englishman wearing a bowler hat and reading the
Times newspaper. I think that English people are quite reserved. I was surprised when I
saw a picture of a tube and everyone sitting and reading their newspapers.

Britain is famous for being a nation of animal lovers, and many people in Britain keep
pets. More than 50 per cent of British families own a pet. They keep some 7.7 million
cats, 6.6 million dogs, one million budgerigars and 18 million goldfish. And they are
increasingly adopting exotic creatures such as small farm animals, snakes, tropical fish,
and spiders; an estimated 2,000 households now have reptiles.

"People think the English are no good at learning foreign languages and have the attitude
that if they yell loud enough in English the "foreigners" will eventually understand
them...

People are generally getting married at a later age now and many women do not want to
have children immediately. They prefer to concentrate on their jobs and put off having a
baby until late thirties. The number of single-parent families is increasing. This is mainly
due to more marriages ending in divorce, but some women are also choosing to have
children as lone parents without being married.

An English National Costume group are trying to make England's national dress be the
clothes worn by the Anglo Saxons during the 7th century. The Anglo-Saxons were
warrior-farmers and came from north-western Europe. They began to invade Britain
during 450 A.D. In Scotland the national dress is a kilt. The kilt is worn around the waist.
The national costume of Wales is a long skirt, worn with a petticoat and topped with a
shawl.

Many festivals and holidays in Britain are centuries old. Every town, village and hamlet
in Britain has its own traditions, some involving months of careful planning and
preparations of costumes and choreography, others requiring simply a worrying desire to
make a complete and utter fool of oneself.

English people have a lot of interesting traditions that make them different from other
people, they have their own superstitions, favorite food, favorite pets and many other
things that makes them so special and important!
