JUNE EXAMINATION 2008
MATHEMATICS PAPER 3
GRADE 11
MARKS: 95 TIME:2 hour

Question 1
Keryn is planning on spending the evening with friends. She is undecided about what to wear. She has to
choose from the following items on her bed:
• Blue jeans(BJ) or White jeans(WJ)
• Red shirt(RS), Pink shirt(PS) or Brown shirt(BS)
• High-heel shoes(H) or Takkies(T)

1.1 Draw a tree diagram to show all the possible outcomes. [6]

1.2 Each item has an equal chance of being selected and is selected at random.

1.2.1 What is the probability that Keryn will wear blue jeans and high-heel shoes? [2]

1.2.2 What is the probability that Keryn will wear red shirt and takkies? [2]

Question 2
At Jordan High School there are 126 learners in grade 11. Of these learners, 44 take Physics, 112 take
Maths and 90 take Biology. All the learners who take Physics also take Maths. 80 learners take Maths and
Biology and 30 learners do Physics and Biology.

Let A represent Physics, M represent Maths and B represent Biology.

2.1 Draw a Venn diagram to illustrate the given information. [8]

2.2 If a learner is chosen at random, determine the probability of a learner doing:

2.2.1 none of the subjects [2]

2.2.2 Maths but NOT Biology [2]

2.2.3 Maths OR Biology [2]

2.2.4 P ( M ∩ B ) [3]
{17}

Question 3
3.1 Determine whether each of the following events are independent or dependent:

3.1.1 Selecting a marble and then selecting a second marble without replacing the first. [2]

3.1.2 Rolling a dice and then selecting a card from a pack [2]

3.2 Two balanced dice, one red and one blue, are rolled. Find each probability:

3.2.1 P (1 AND 1) [2]

3.2.2 P (4 AND 1) [2]

3.2.3 P (an even number AND a 3) [2]

3.2.4 P (a number greater than 4 AND a 3) [2]

Question 4
Sixty grade 8 boys and girls ran 50 metres and their times, in seconds, were recorded.

4.1 James says: “All boys run faster than girls.”

Jill says: “Some boys run faster than girls.”
Using the above data, discuss the truth of both statements. [4]

4.2 Consider the data for the girls.

The girls who ran a time of 9,7s are removed from the data sample. How would this affect the following (if
at all)?:

4.2.1 Mean [2]

4.2.2 Median [2]

4.2.3 Mode [2]

Motivate your answer without doing mathematical calculations.
