CHAPTER 22-29

CARDIOVASCULAR

1. ANEURYSM
- an excessive localized enlargement of an artery caused by a weakening of the
artery wall
2. ANGINA PECTORIS
-temporary chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart, AKA ischemic
chest pain
3. ANGIOCARDIOGRAM
- the radiographic visualization of the heart and its blood vessels after injection of a
radiopaque substance.
4. ARTERIOSCLEROSIS
-Arteriosclerosis occurs when the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients
from your heart to the rest of your body (arteries) become thick and stiff — sometimes
restricting blood flow to your organs and tissues.
5. ATHEROSCLEROSIS
-Atherosclerosis refers to the buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in
and on your artery walls (plaque), which can restrict blood flow.
6. ARRHYTHMIA/DYSRYTHMIA
-Improper beating of the heart, whether irregular, too fast, or too slow. Occurs
when the electrical impulses in the heart do not work properly
7. AUTOGRAFT
-Grafts transferred from one part of the body to another part of the same person
(using own tissue)
8. ANOXIA
-When the body or brain completely loses oxygen supply
9. BUERGER’S DISEASE
-Buerger’s disease is a rare illness that inflames and blocks blood vessels in your
arms and legs. This stops blood flow and leads to clots that affect your hands and feet.
AKA thromboangiitis or TAO
10. CARDIOLOGY
-is the study and treatment of disorders of the heart and the blood vessels.
11. COMPENSATED
CHAPTER 22-29
CARDIOVASCULAR

-correction of an organic defect by excessive development or by increased functioning of

another organ or unimpaired parts of the same organ cardiac
12. DECOMPENSATED
-The inability of a bodily organ or system, especially the circulatory system, to maintain
adequate physiological function in the presence of disease.
13. ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY
-test that uses sound waves to create moving pictures of your heart. The pictures show
the size and shape of your heart. They also show how well your heart's chambers and
valves are working.
14. ENDOCARDITIS
-An infection of the heart's inner lining, usually involving the heart valves.
15. RAYNAUD’S DISEASE
-is a rare disorder of the blood vessels, usually in the fingers and toes. It causes the
blood vessels to narrow when you are cold or feeling stressed. When this happens, blood
can't get to the surface of the skin and the affected areas turn white and blue.
16. HOMOGRAFT
-a tissue graft from a donor of the same species as the recipient. Tissue is NOT taken
from the same client as it is for an autograft.
17. HEART BLOCK
-Heart block is a type of heart rhythm disorder (arrythmia). It is the slowing down or
interruption of the electrical signal from the upper chambers of the heart (the atria) to
the lower chambers (the ventricles).
18. HYPOXIA
-state of insufficient oxygen supply for normal life functions
19. ISCHEMIA
-a condition in which the blood flow (and thus oxygen) is restricted or reduced in a part
of the body
20. HYPERTENSION
-A condition in which the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high.
21. MYOCARDITIS
-inflammation of the middle layer of the heart wall.
CHAPTER 22-29
CARDIOVASCULAR

22. NECROSIS
-the death of most or all of the cells in an organ or tissue due to disease, injury, or
failure of the blood supply.
23. MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION
-A blockage of blood flow to the heart muscle. AKA heart attack
24. PANCARDITIS
-also called perimyoendocarditis, is the inflammation of the entire heart: the
pericardium, the myocardium and the endocardium.
25. PAROXYSMAL TACHYCARDIA
-Episodes of rapid heartbeat that occur from time to time; abruptly
26. PERICARDITIS
-A swelling and irritation of the thin saclike membrane surrounding the heart
(pericardium).
27. PHLEBITIS
- inflammation of a vein and it can be caused by any insult to the blood vessel wall,
impaired venous flow, or coagulation abnormality.
28. ELECTROCARDIOGRAM
-test that measures your heart's electrical activity AKA ECG or EKG.
29. STENOSIS
-is the narrowing or restriction of a blood vessel or valve that reduces blood flow.
30. THROMBOPHLEBITIS
-Thrombophlebitis is when a blood clot forms in one of your veins and slows down the
blood flow in the vein. It most often affects your legs, but it can also happen in your
arms or other veins in your body.
