Throughout our history as humanity, there has been an innate fear of monsters in all
people. Have you ever noticed how a child is afraid of the dark? This is because our species is
one that operates in the light of day as primates. We are not meant to be in the dark so we
become scared with subconscious reasons that make us feel as if something is preying upon us.
We feel the eyes of the beasts watching us, which might not be really there, but then how can
we sense nothing watching us? Is it the night air that raises the hairs on the back of hair neck
and causes our heart to race with fear and adrenaline? Ultimately we don͛t know so we fill the
unknown with stories of bogeymen, headless horsemen, goblins and golems. Of these
monstrous creatures created by the society man, the werewolf and the vampire have proved to
be the most notorious. These very different yet oh so similar evils scare us for they prey upon
us, but where did they come from? In the following report, I will account my perspective on
why we fear these beasts and where they come from. These creatures lie in the taboos of our
society for they are within the subconscious of humanity either innately or suppressed. We fear
the werewolf and the vampire because we see our dark, horrible fantasies within them.

To start this argument I will set up the psyche of a conscious man. He will have an id,
and ego, and a super ego. The id is the natural drive of a being to kill, eat and reproduce. The
ego is self awareness that allows the man to have common sense and make decisions based
upon long term consequences. As Freud but it, the id is like a horse while the ego acts as the
driver. The id is what powers the motion of the overall being but the ego gives the directions on
how the animal will use its power. A man also possesses a superego, which is the conscience of
a man. The superego is the sense of right and wrong. A big example is guilt. A model of this
could be demonstrated with the horse and the rider. Say if the rider came upon a large garden
and he needed to get through it, his choice would be to ride through the garden, destroying the
flowers, or go around and leave the garden unharmed. The practical choice would be to go
straight through the garden for the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, but
the superego would tell the rider to go around, because it is wrong to destroy the flowers of the
garden.

Werewolves are men that have by some encounter with nature, become a lupine
creature. Once the man has become the beast, he acts solely upon his primal instincts. The
whole body of the man is transformed to appear more like a beast. His teeth become
sharpened like a canine and he may tend to walk on all four legs. Also, he will have fur which by
day he conceals under his skin, which at night will be turned inside out to reveal the monster.

Where do werewolves come from? They come from the innate desires as humans to
fulfill our primal drives. This is the id which lies in all humans. The werewolf is a man with no
semblance of a ego once he has shifted to the beast. He does what he wants, when he wants,
whenever he wants and doesn͛t have to think about it. He acts solely upon impulse. What
directs his action is a primal need for violence and sexuality. As humanity, this is such a taboo
because innately in our subconscious mind, we want to be that. As animals of the earth, all that
we do is in some way driven by our unconscious desires, so a wish would be to give up on the
nobility and remorse and just be selfish creatures that focus only on survival and reproduction.
A clear representation of the id in a werewolf is the fur. As the man by day hiding the fur under
his skin symbolizes the suppression of natural drives into the subconscious of the minds of man.
At night, the id seizes control of the man and turns him into a beast, literally shown in the
revealing of the fur. This demonstrates the full transition from the man to the beast.

Next is the vampire. A vampire fits the profile very similar to that of a psychopath. It is
just the rider and the horse. The vampire, with a lack of a superego, has a swelled ego. As a
result, he believes that what he knows is superior to other beings and also his awareness of
himself is above all other beings, putting himself on the pedestal of a narcissist. He is separated
from his ability to relate to other being which as a result is separated from emotions
completely. The vampire is very confident is all ways and easily offended by criticism or
opposition.

In our minds, either in the forefront of our conscious thought or in suppressed deep into
our subconscious we want to be this. Our priorities in our minds are instinctually selfish. Our
first thought is to look out for ourselves, so it seems that we would wish to only have to be
selfish and not worry about other beings. We long to be a superior being solely driven by
confidence that it is so. We would feed upon others inferiority like the vampire feeds on the
blood of the weaker. Just as the vampire steals blood, we would take away from the lives of
others because we believe we deserve it more because we are a dominant being. In our
subconscious, there are no feelings of, love or compassion, only selfish drives, so
subconsciously we wish to solely want to be that.

Both the vampire and the werewolf have the ability to turn others into the beings they
are. This means that these beasts come from men and it is an infectious idea. We fear this
because it is not just a beast that can eat us, but we can become this evil being. We do not wish
this because our superego and societal superego condemn this as wrong and inhuman.
As conscience beings, we cannot be a vampire or a werewolf because our conscious
thoughts keep us from ͞evil.͟ Although the superego which we have developed tells us what is
right and wrong, we still have the choice between the two in our minds. We still have the
suppressed thoughts that tell us to be selfish and thrive. It wants us to dominate the world, not
just live in it peacefully. In conclusion, werewolves and vampires are creatures formed in the
ramblings of our subconscious ͞evil fantasies.͟ We fear them because we see the taboo of our
own dark thoughts in what they represent and try to stay away from them in fear that we will
become them.
