“Is Tradition Green?”

as part of the Sub theme on “Continuing Traditions in New Architecture and
Urbanism”.
(14th January 2007)

This discussion addressed the following issues:

- Whether modern functionality overrides tradition and whether the “Green” approach just helps
objectivising a traditional approach which might be otherwise based on subjective criteria like
collective memory.
- The gap between “upgraded” traditional methods and modern hi-tech technology.
- Whether modern technology and materials ensures true “green” or just a green “label” as
compared to a traditional approach in construction, materials and details.
- Whether embodied energy or lifespan costs should be the criterion for defining “Green” and
which of the two abovementioned approaches works towards a truly environmentally sustainable
outcome in building.
- If “green” should be the paradigmatic model to guide architecture and urbanism in a
modernizing India
