RIDING AS ONE – Lesson 7

riding with mind, body and soul

Choosing the right exercise and correct

workspace

LEARNING OBJECTIVE
Our basic learning objective today is to take all that you’ve learned and apply it to the
first riding exercise: My Pick-me Up. Everything you’ve been learning in the previous
modules, and including this module, is my Pre-flight. Pre-flight originates from the
preflight checklists used by pilots. I refer to it as the process of confirming that every-
thing is in order and correct for riding safely and in True-partnership.

Going through the first six modules and now this one doesn't mean it's time to ride...
it's just time to see how the horse shows up at the mounting block. Mounting a quiet,
calm, relaxed and connected horse is our goal here. Training your eye to see what
connection looks like during this process of wanting to get on is paramount as this is
the foundation for riding safely and in true-partnership.

Not only should the Pick-me Up be about relaxation and connection, everything before
mounting is about creating the mindset of relaxation, connection and partnership.
Your mindset and your horse’s mindset need to be the same. You both need to be
grounded and connected before you get on. As I always say “busy feet reflect a busy
mind.” If your horse moves or is pensive when you bring them to the mounting block
(you need a mounting block for this exercise), your horse is not where you need them
to be. This level of un-ease can, and often does, carry into the work.

Please know that my goal for you is to develop a tuned in, observant and trained eye
within you. This level of trained eye is going to not only help you see the many subtle
signs and expressions your horse shares it is going to assist in teaching you to see what
happens before it happens, thus prevent accidents.

TRY THIS
As you watch this video on the Pick-me Up, please pay attention to the subtle
qualities of ease, calm and connection in my horse. How many times does my horse

do the following before I bring him to the mounting block?
Hook onto me (stay close) during the walk to the mounting block?
Look at me?
Lean into me as I walk up the mounting block?

PROBLEM-SOLVING STRATEGY & TIP

The Tao of Horsemanship Online Academy is about developing the ultimate
relationship, connection and partnership when riding. This can only be accomplished
when we have the right mindset – right intention and attitude. Please remember that
how we feel, how our horses feel, reflects in our bodies and actions. If we are not at
ease with mounting we must go back to our building blocks, our foundation, and
either find the missing building block or strengthen the weakest link.

Having clear and purposeful intention combined with paying attention (keep your
eye on their eye) is important to assisting you and your horse in this exercise.

Key Point: When teaching, and learning something new, it is important to do the
exercise (try this), correctly 3 times. Three is the magic number when it comes to
pattern recognition and forming new patterns/habits.

If you struggle repeating the exercise correctly, stop and re-group. Review my video
again, back-track and either find the missing building block or strengthen the
weakest link.

WRITE IT DOWN
Write down what you observe and take your Riding as One Module “Try This” (cheat sh
with you as you make your way out to your horse. Now please tack up your horse and
practice what you’ve learned and let me know how it works out.

Again, if you are struggling with this exercise (any of them) I recommend filming yourse
again only 1-3 minutes worth. Filming yourself brings you closer to the work of masterin
awareness – path to developing feel and timing in horsemanship.

I look forward to hearing from you in the comments!

May you always be one with your horse
