After calibration of the 909X Gyro Logging Tool, and on a monthly basis, the drift of the gyro should
be tested on the deviation test stand. The procedure is as follows. Record the results on the bottom
of the test sheet below.
1. Tool Warm-up. Allow the tool to spin-up for at least one hour before testing. In extreme cold
conditions, an additional ½-hour spin-up time should be used.
2. Use normal logging procedures using the time-drive function in LOG. As we like to talk about
drift per hour, the log recorded should be 600 feet at 10 feet per minute rate
3. The test stand direction is set to north, with the dimple facing also facing north; you need to
enter the toolface direction of 0 degrees, and magnetic declination of 0, prior to starting the log.
Remember to change the logging direction to UP.
4. Prior to starting the logging, Cage and then Uncage the Gyro.
5. Also, mark a reference spot on the tool to indicate toolface direction, to stop the tool at precisely
the same spot on the tool. This would be similar to sighting to a survey stake at the beginning
and end of a survey.
8. After four (4) revolutions, stop the rotation and continue logging for 150 feet.
9. Rotate the tool in the other direction four (4) revolutions. Make sure to stop the tool at the
marked spot. (NOTE: Some rotational motors will work in only one direction).
