MAJOR KEYS

Melodic Dictation
Beginning with this chapter, dictations will appear in any of the fifteen major keys.
Nonetheless, students’ tasks remain the same as before. They should hear and
remember a section of the music, determine where the tonic (i/da) lies, calculate
the other scale degrees from that tonic, then finally notate those pitches. The dif-
ference now is that the tonic will differ from one dictation to another. Some stu-
dents will need to work on their skills writing out key signatures and translating
scale degrees in various keys in both treble and bass clef
For each dictation, announce only the clef, tonic, and bottom number in the
meter sign.

Error Detection and Correction
Instructors are encouraged to continue to work with students on error detection
and correction. At this point, students can begin to compare what they hear to
actual music notation in all major keys.
