What is a Server?

¾a computer program running as a service, to serve the

needs or requests of other programs (referred to in this
context as "clients") which may or may not be running on
the same computer.
¾a physical computer dedicated to running one or more such
services, to serve the needs of programs running on other
computers on the same network.
¾a software/hardware system (i.e. a software service
running on a dedicated computer) such as a database
server, file server, mail server, or print server.

Why Server better than PC?

¾ Servers often run for long periods without interruption and availability must often be very
high, making hardware reliability and durability extremely important. Although servers can

t mission-critical
i i iti l enterprise
t i servers are idideally
ll very
fault tolerant and use specialized hardware with low failure rates in order to
maximize uptime, for even a short-term failure can cost more than purchasing and installing
the system

1. RAS (Reliability Availability Serviceability)
– High quality component for better MTBF
– Hot

2. Higher Performance
– More processor, more memory, more disks
3 Scalability
3.
– Upgradeable to a significant level
• Up to 4 or 8 way processor
• Up to 1TB to 3TB Memory
4. Manageability

Traditional server paradigms need to change
ƒ The x86-based PC architecture is now 28 years old.
ƒ It has evolved through PCs, towers, racks and blades.
ƒ Holds 53 percent of the server market and that number is growing.

What is a Blade?
● A Blade contains the core components of a server
– Each blade has:
• Processors
• Memory
• Internal storage (optional) Blade-server with cover off

• Network Interface Cards ((NIC))

• Optional plug-in components
● The Blade server plugs into the midplane of a
chassis that provides common functions as:
– Management console Access (KVM)
– Power supplies Blade server with its cover on ready for
insertion into the BladeCenter Chassis
– Cooling Fans
– Network Connectivity ( LAN, SAN, NAS, HPC)
– Shared media devices (CD/DVD-ROM and
diskette or USB drives)
– Optional Modules to support additional
functions

Future – History m
• IBM introduced BladeCenter in November 2002, since then IBM has maintained compatibility, grown the
portfolio and opened the specification to the industry. Key to BladeCenter is true reliability, with no single
points of failure and massively improved density, simplification, power & cooling, management and
choice.
