• When adding or subtracting fractions, we should look at the denominator. Unlike in
addition or subtraction of whole numbers, addition or subtraction of fraction requires that
the denominators are the same. When two or more fractions have the same denominators,
we call them like fractions. When two or more fractions have different denominators, we
call them unlike fractions.

Example 1:
The fractions 27 and 37 are like fractions.
The fractions 45 and 105 are unlike fractions.

Let’s have first the like fractions. See the figure below

problem. Thus, for multi-step problems, number sentence is presented using brackets and
parenthesis. This will help in determining the order of the operations to be done.
Parenthesis ( ) indicate that the operation on the number inside is to be done first, to
be followed by the operation in the brackets , until there are only two numbers left to
compute.

Lei, an online seller deals 12 bags of onions. 6 bags weigh 8 kilograms and the other 6 bags
weigh 5 kilograms. She repacked the onions in plastic bags of 0.25 kg per pack and sold each
for ₱24.50. How much will he get if all the packs were sold?
