Example 10.3
Waste 1: Poultry
M% = 70%  Dry % = 30%
N% = 6.3%
C:N1 = 15
Q1 = 1 kg
Waste 2: Oat Straw
M% = 20%  Dry % = 80%
N% = 1.1%
C:N2 = 48
Q2 = ?
To reach a C:N=30 for the mix of the 2 types:

Q 1 [ C 1 ( 100−M 1 ) ] +Q 2 [ C2 ( 100−M 2 ) ] Q1 [ N 1 ( 100−M 1 ) ] × ( C : N )1 +Q 2 [ N 2 ( 100−M 2 ) ] × ( C : N )2 1 ( 0.063

C:N= = =
Q 1 [ N 1 ( 100−M 1 ) ] +Q 2 [ N 2 ( 100−M 2 ) ] Q 1 [ N 1 ( 100−M 1 ) ] +Q 2 [ N 2 ( 100−M 2 ) ] 1 (0

Solving for Q2

 Q 2=1.79 kg

 C 27 H 38 O16 N +10.25 H 2 O→ 13.875 C H 4 +13.125 C O2 + N H 3
 Mass of C 27 H 38 O 16 N = 27 x 12 + 38 x 1 + 16 x 16 + 14 = 632 g
 Mass of 13.875 moles of C H 4 =¿13.875 x (12 + 1 x 4) = 222 g
 By cross multiplication, 1 kg of C 27 H 38 O 16 N will generate:
222
1000 × =351 g of C H 4
632
Ideal gas law: PV = nRT → V = nRT/P (with P = 1 atm; R = 0.082 L.atm/K/mol; T = 15 + 273 = 288 K)

 V C H =518 L

Problem 10.10

 C 11 H 14 O4 N +11.75 O2 → 11C O2 +5.5 H 2 O+ N H 3

 25% of N was used  22*0.25 = 5.5 g were used, and 16.5 g remain in the final composition
 Also, in the final composition, C:N = 9.43  9.43 x 16.5 g (remaining N) = 155.6 g of C
 By cross-multiplication (with 16.5 g of N), and by using the molar composition of C 11 H 14 O 4 N , the
final composition would contain:
H: (14 moles x 1 g / mole) x 16.5 / 14 = 16.5 g
O: (4 moles x 16 g / mole) x 16.5 / 14 = 75.4 g
 To find the number of moles of C that reacted:
m 513−155.6
o n= = =29.78 moles
M 12
 C+ O 2 → C O 2
Therefore, for 29.78 moles of C, 29.78 moles of O2 reacted
 For hydrogen, some of it was used to generate H2O and some of it for NH3
3 H + N → N H 3
By cross-multiplication: (5.5 g of NH3 reacted)
3
5.5 × =1.18 g of H were used to generate NH3
14
16.5 + 1.18 = 17.68 g of H
60 – 17.68 = 42.3g
1
2 H+ O 2 → H 2 O
2
0.5
By cross-multiplication, 42.3 × =10.58 moles of O2 reacted
2
 Mass of O2 from the waste used = 405 -75.4 = 329.6 g
m 329.6
n= = =20.6 moles of O=10.3 moles of O 2
M 16

 Therefore, the total number of moles of O 2 required is: 29.78+10.58-10.3 = 30.06 moles
 m=n× M =30.06 ×32=961 g=0.96 kg
