5/27/2019 SKF Mount - 22318 EJA/VA405 - Hot mounting - Shaft

Mounting procedure
Designation: 22318 EJA/VA405
Mounting Method: Hot mounting
Interference Fit: Shaft

Mounting preparations

Mount the bearing in a clean environment, or take steps to protect the bearing and mounting
position from contaminants like dust, dirt and moisture. Check housings, shafts and other
components of the bearing arrangement to make sure that they are clean and not damaged.

Leave bearings in their original packaging until mounting so that they do not get dirty.

Check the dimensional and geometrical tolerances of all components that will be in contact with
the bearing.

Typically, the diameter of cylindrical shaft seats is checked using a micrometer at four positions in
three planes. Use the form provided here, or similar, to record the measurements before mounting
and for future quality assurance purposes.

Carefully read all of the instructions before starting work. The instructions may contain alternative
tools and measuring methods. Illustrations are not always proportional and do not always show
the exact design. The instructions are valid for SKF bearings only. Where tool recommendations
are made, check the actual dimensions against the bearing and any other components that may
interfere with the use of the tool.

Mounting and dismounting of rolling bearings may involve the handling of heavy weights, the use
of tools and other devices, and the use of high pressure oil. To avoid accidents, injuries or damage
to property, please carefully follow the prescribed methods.

Wipe the preservative from the bore and outside diameter of the bearing.

If the bearing is to be grease lubricated and used at very high or very low temperatures, or the
grease is not compatible with the preservative, wash and carefully dry the bearing.

Coat the bearing bore surface with a thin layer of light oil.

Coat the bearing outside surface with a thin layer of light oil.

Mounting procedure

1. Heat the bearing.

Induction heater SKF TIH 030m can be used.

Induction heater SKF TIH 100m can be used.

Induction heater SKF TIH 220m can be used.

Normally, a bearing temperature of 80 to 90 °C (145 to 160 °F) above the shaft temperature is sufficient for mounting.

Do not heat bearings to a temperature above 125 °C (260 °F) and never heat bearings using an open flame.

An electric oven may be used. Place the bearing on supports to enable free air flow around the bearing.

Wear clean protective gloves when handling the hot bearing.

2. Push the bearing onto and along the shaft to its abutment and hold the bearing in position until it
grips.

3. Attach the locking device.

4. Check that the shaft or outer ring can be rotated freely.

Additional recommendations

Normally the bearing should be filled completely with grease unless it is to operate at high speeds, in
which case the free space in the housing should only be partially filled (30 to 50%) with grease. In non-
vibrating applications, where bearings are to operate at very low speeds and good protection against
contamination is required, SKF recommends filling up to 90% of the free space in the housing with
grease.

The SKF grease meter LAGM 1000E helps with keeping track of the supplied quantity.

For information on selecting a suitable grease, considering actual operating conditions, refer to the
SKF Quick grease selection guide.

If the bearing is to be oil lubricated then use sufficient quantity of the correct oil.

If the bearing is to be grease lubricated, add the grease now.

If the bearing is to be fitted in a plummer block housing, refer to the mounting instructions for the
relevant housing.

If the recommended heaters are not suitable for heating this bearing, then a special TIH heater may be
the best choice. Contact info.mapro@skf.com for more information.

Applying the recommended values prevents the inner ring from creeping, but does not ensure correct
radial internal clearence in operation. Additional influences from the bearing housing fit and
temperature differences between the inner and outer rings, must be considered carefully when
selecting the bearing radial internal clearance class. For additional information, contact the SKF
application engineering service.
