Overview
This document describes risk assessment about major operations in WCDMA-CS. Major
operations are categorized into maintenance related operations and command related
operations. This document provides possible impacts of various operations, prompting you to
perform correct operations and reduce faults caused by improper operations.
Read this document before maintenance operations on the UMG89000. The following chapter
s are descrebed in this document.

1 User Guide
This document provides risky operations that may lead to faults during routine maintenance
and fault handling according to analysis of previous faults in the devices running on existing
networks. As far as operations in this document are concerned, you must strictly follow the
instructions described here; otherwise, the risky operations may lead to faults with serious
consequences.
The risk grades are as follows:
★★★★★ indicates that the operation may lead to a fault of level 2 or above.
★★★★ indicates that the operation may lead to a fault of level 3 or above.
★★★ indicates that the operation may lead to a fault of level 4 or above.
★★ indicates that the operation may lead to a fault or interrupt services.
3 High-Risk Operations
3.1 Introduction
This chapter describes the precautions for board replacement:
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) prevention
Board switchover
Board removal
Board insertion
Wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap and connect it to the ESD jack in the cabinet to ground
the wrist strap properly. See 6.1.

Avoid touching the board with any part of your body except your hands.
[Mitigation procedure]
3.3.1 Precautions
Take caution when you perform switchover. Note the following points:
1. You can perform switchover only when the conditions are met. For example, the slave
board works normally. Frequent switchover is prohibited.
2. When a board of the system is in the switchover progress, you cannot switch over or
replace another board.
3. The switchover operation should be performed when the traffic is low. This is to prevent
call interruption and impact to service.
4. When certain boards are switcher over, the accuracy of traffic statistics for measurement
units associated with the boards in the statistics collection period may be affected.
5. This operation has certain risks; thus, the operator must be familiar with the device and
understand the link status in each office direction. This operation can be performed only
when both the master and slave boards run properly. Before performing this operation,
obtain approval from Huawei technical support personnel.
6. Switch over the MOMU with caution.
7. The CLK board can be switched over only when the clock of the master board is
synchronous with that of the slave board and when its slave board is in the tracking, free,
or hold state.
8. The below table lists the boards that can be switched over.
Operation Guide Criteria
You can run the SWP BRD command to You can see that the master board
switch over the following boards that work in resets.
1+1 backup mode: The former master board acts as the
OMU slave boards, and the former slave board
MPU acts as the master board.

The system runs properly after the
switchover.

During board switchover, the system

2. Run the DSP BRDVER command to check whether the version of the board to be
switched over is consistent with the version of the slave board. If not, take measures to
ensure the version consistency.
3. Run the DSP PATCH command to check whether the patches on the board to be
switched over are consistent with those on the slave board. If not, take measures to
ensure the patch consistency.
4. Run the LST BRDSTART command to check the loading mode of the master board to
be switched over. If the loading mode is not FLASH, run the SET BRDSTART
command to change the loading mode into FLASH.
5. Run the SWP BRD command and input the frame ID, slot ID, and front and rear
location parameters of the master board to be switched over before performing the
switchover.
6. If the switchover fails, contact Huawei technical support.
Step 2 Switch over the board directly through the control panel of the device.
1. Select Device Panel and click Device Management. Choose the cabinet and frame
where the board is located to find the board to be switched over.
2. Query and modify the board backup status, board version, patch status, and loading
mode. Ensure that the switchover conditions are met.
3. Then, switch over the board. The subsequent operations are the same as those in method
1.
----End
1. Ensure that the slave board for the board to be removed works normally.
2. Do not touch the other boards. Otherwise, they may be powered off.
Perform this operation under the guide to board replacement in the product manual.
Properly wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap and gloves. In addition, connect the
grounding terminal to the ESD jack in the cabinet. Ensure that the ESD-preventive wrist
strap is properly grounded.
[Mitigation measure]
Note the following points:
− Only a slave board can be removed. To remove an master board, switch it over to the
slave one first.
− Avoid touching the other boards. Otherwise, they may be powered off.
− Do not introduce or cut off any connection line.
Removal of a master board:
− When a normally-operating slave board and a bridge board are in position:
(1) Switch over the board to the slave status manually.
(2) When the former slave board acts as the master one and works normally, you can
remove the former master board.
− When a normally-operating slave board and a bridge board are both unavailable:
− (1) Do not remove the board; otherwise, the system is powered off.
3. Pull the board panel with one hand and hold the board bottom with the other hand.
Observe the OFFLINE indicator below the ejectors. When this indicator is on, you can
detach the board from the base board. See part d in 5.1.
After pulling the two ejectors handles outwards, you can remove the board only when the
OFFLINE indicator is on. Otherwise, the board removal may cause device damage.
After a board is removed, you can power it on only when it is inserted again.
Before removing an OMU, reset it. Removing an OMU before the OFFLINE indicator is
on can damage the BAM file. Follow the standard operation procedure.
4. Check the name of the new board. If a faulty board is replaced, set the DIP switch and
jumper on the new board based on the setting of the DIP switch and jumper on the
replaced board.
5. Place the replaced board in an ESD-preventive box or bag.
so that the ejector handle hooks the hole in the mount bar. In this manner, the board is
tightly connected to the base board. See part c in 4.1.
4. Fasten the screws in both ends of the board panel clockwise. Ensure that the board is
reliably fixed. See part d in 4.1.
4. Run the DSP command to check whether H.248, M2UA, and M3UA links and circuits
are normal.
5. Query call logs and check whether call loss occurs after the operation.
6. Check whether the traffic statistics about the call completion ratio in each office
direction on the softswitch are normal.
7. Perform complete service test to ensure that the service is normal.
8. If exceptions are found in any of the preceding inspection, contact Huawei technical
support immediately.
3. Run the CHK VERSION command to check whether the software in the hard disk on
the master OMU is of the standard version.
4. Run the CHK VERSION command to check whether the software in the hard disk on
the slave OMU is of the standard version.
5. Run the CHK FILE command to check whether the files in the hard disk on the OMU
are correct.
6. Run the CHK VERSION command to check whether the software running on the board
is of the standard version.
7. Run the DSP PATCH command to check the patch version.
8. Run the DSP command to check the status of H.248, M2UA, and M3UA links.
9. Query call logs and check whether call loss occurs after the operation.
10. Check whether the traffic statistics about the call completion ratio in each office
direction on the softswitch are normal.
11. Perform complete service test to ensure that the service is normal.
For details, see the UMG8900 software version upgrade instructions.
7. Check whether the traffic statistics about the call completion ratio in each office
direction on the softswitch are normal.
8. Perform complete service test to ensure that the service is normal.
Certain maintenance commands of the UMG8900 greatly affect the entire system. Therefore,
these commands should be used with caution or cannot be used.
