Sir Lee Gon, 45 years old was brought into the emergency room for sustaining multiple wounds and a
deep open laceration on his upper right thigh from an automobile accident. Nurse Luna is assigned to the
client.

1. What type of shock will Nurse Luna anticipate Sir Lee Gon to be diagnosed with and why?

- Car accidents can cause painful injuries. While many of these injuries are immediately recognizable,
such as fractures, burns, and spinal damage, other injuries may not be so easy to detect. This is the most
common type of shock that occurs after a serious car crash. Hypovolemic shock occurs when a person
loses blood rapidly. The decreased flow of oxygen-rich blood causes a person’s heart rate to increase,
which results in faster and shallower respirations. In order to compensate for the lack of oxygen-rich
blood flow and keep the person alive, his or her organs begin shutting down. As one’s organs shut down,
permanent damage can occur without the person noticing it.

2. Nurse Luna noticed that Sir Lee Gon is so pale with cold clammy skin. Explain what is/are the
physiologic changes responsible for these manifestations in relation to your answer in # 1?

The most common cause of hypovolemic shock is blood loss when a major blood vessel bursts or when
you’re seriously injured. This is called hemorrhagic shock.

1. Rapid heartbeat.
2. Quick, shallow breathing.
3. Feeling weak.
4. Being tired.
5. Confusion or wooziness.
6. Having little or no pee.
7. Low blood pressure.
8. Cool, clammy skin.
