Michigan Heart, Greenville located 707 South

testing center to Spectrum Health United Hospital.
West Michigan Heart, as an organization, became
part of the Spectrum Health system on January 1,
2010. The primary goal of this collaboration is to

OBITUARY
Frank C. Grannis
Frank C. Grannis, age 85, of Howard City,
passed away peacefully, with his family by his
side, February 1, 2011, at Clark-on-Keller Lake,
Windsor Manor in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Frank was born June 19, 1925 in Howard City,
Michigan, the son of Russell and Ruth Grannis.
He was a devoted Christian and a life long
member of the Howard City United Methodist
Church and Heritage United Methodist Church
in Howard City. He loved spending time with
his family, traveling, playing golf and reading.
Frank proudly served his country in the United
States Navy during World
War II and was a founding
member of the Howard City
VFW Post 3306 in 1949. On
January 14, 1945, he mar-
ried his high school sweet-
heart Louise Hall in Norfolk,
Virginia, before being
deployed on the Destroyer
GRANNIS 878 Visole where he served
in the Pacific Ocean and was
in the first fleet of United States ships to sail
into Tokyo Bay in World War II. After return-
ing from the war, Frank and Louise settled in
Howard City and Frank worked for several local
businesses before starting Grannis’ Dairy, which
he and Louise owned and operated for 14 years.
In 1968 Frank went to work for the Montcalm
County Sheriff’s Department as an Ambulance
Operator/Deputy Sheriff. He continued to work
for the Sheriff’s Department until his retire-
ment in 1988. Frank also served the Village of
Howard City as Village Clerk for 28 years, Fire
Chief for 14 years and as a Village police offi-
cer for 10 years, serving 2 years as Howard City
Police Chief.
Louise, his wife of 65 years, parents Russell
and Ruth, sisters Marion, Mabel, Cathy, brothers
Harold and Robert preceded him in death. He is
survived by two sons, Keith (Terri) of Howard
City, Bruce (Kim) of Moss Bluff, Louisiana, one
daughter Judy (John) Slattengren of Rochelle
Illinois, four grandsons Allen, Nathan, Jeff,
Jason, and four great grandchildren, three sis-
ters, Ruth Hall and Esther Grannis of Cleveland,

South Carolina, and several nieces and neph-
ews.
Funeral services for Frank will be held at
Heritage United Methodist Church in Howard
City with Pastor Brad Brillhart officiating on
Friday, February 4, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. Burial
will take place in Reynolds Cemetery. Memorials
to the Hauenstein Parkinson’s Center, Grand
Rapids, Michigan, may be left at the Heckman
Funeral Home in Howard City where the family
will meet with friends on Thursday, February 3,
2011, from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
John Nelson
John Nelson, 77, of Morley
went home to be with his Lord
on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, at
Spectrum Health Butterworth
Campus.
He was born May 18, 1933,
in Bush, Ill., the son of Charles
and Jennie Nelson. During
his working years he worked
at York Instrument, GM, and
Williams Form Engineering. NELSON
He also owned Nelson and Sons Builders and
Northland Tool Rental. John enjoyed hunting
and fishing but most of all sports. He had a great
sense of humor and always knew how to make
people laugh (“ have you heard the one about the
pickle.?”) John loved his family and friends and
will be greatly, especially at the sporting events.
Morley Stanwood has never had a bigger fan.
John is survived by his loving wife of 57 years,
Beulah Louise; children, John (Sue) of Sparta,
Charles of Morley, Don (Sharon) of Morley,
Sharon (Paula) of Walker and David (Pamela)
of Stanwood; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grand-
children; brother, Dean (Sandy) Nelson; sister-
in-law, Maryanne Nelson; and many nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by parents;
brothers, Charles and Donald Nelson; and sister,
Betty Lawrence.
Funeral took place on Saturday at Grace Com-
munity Church with Pastor Joel Cooper. Burial in
the Aetna Cemetery.

Taylor A. Jonas
Army Pvt. Taylor A. Jonas has graduated from the
Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning,
Columbus, Ga. The training consists of Basic Infantry
Training and Advanced Individual Training.
During the nine weeks of basic combat training,
the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies,
weapons employment, map reading, tactics, military
courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid skills,
and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional
training included development of basic combat skills
and battlefield operations and tactics, and experienced
use of various weapons and weapons defenses available
to the infantry crewman.
The Advanced Individual Training course is designed
to train infantry soldiers to perform reconnaissance op-
erations; employ, fire and recover anti-personnel and
anti-tank mines; locate and neutralize land mines and
operate target and sight equipment; operate and main-
tain communications equipment and radio networks;
construct field firing aids for infantry weapons; and per-
form infantry combat exercises and dismounted battle
drills, which includes survival procedures in a nuclear,
biological or chemical contaminated area.
Jonas is the son of William LaRose of Grant St., Ce-
dar Springs, Mich.
The private is a 2009 graduate of Cedar Springs
High School.

sumption continuing to be linked
to different ailments, some surpris-
ing new research indicates people
can include added sugars as part of
a balanced diet without increasing
their risk of heart disease or weight
gain.
The key is moderation and main-
taining other healthy habits.
Consuming fructose from added
sugars at levels found in the aver-
age American diet does not lead to
weight gain or increased risk for
heart disease when part of a weight-
stable diet, according to new re-
search presented at the American
Heart Association’s (AHA) Scientific
Sessions 2010 conference.
This marks the first time re-
searchers have measured the effects
of added sugars consumption on
body weight, total cholesterol and
triglycerides levels, when consumed
at levels typical of the general popu-
lation.
“These findings demonstrate that
added sugars, whether from table
sugar or high fructose corn syrup, do
not promote weight gain or increase
total cholesterol, triglycerides or
LDL cholesterol when coupled with
a balanced diet,” said Dr. James
Rippe, a cardiologist who is director
of the Lifestyle Medicine Initiative
at Orlando Regional Healthcare and
the study’s chief investigator.
Interestingly, the new study was
accepted for presentation at the AHA
conference even though it conflicts
with the association’s recommenda-
tions. The AHA recommends men
and women consume no more than
100 and 150 calories of added sug-
ars daily (about 38 grams), though
more than 90 percent of Americans

“Although this study is not li-
cense to over-indulge, it does inform
us we can enjoy sugar in moderation
as long as we are following a healthy
lifestyle. That’s an important take-
away for people like moms who may
want to use added sweeteners to
make healthy foods more attractive
to their children.”
Table sugar (sucrose) is the lead-
ing source of added sugar in the
American diet, followed by high
fructose corn syrup (corn sugar).
Sugar and high fructose corn syrup
contain nearly the same one-to-one
ratio of two simple sugars: fructose
and glucose.
In the double-blind study, which
was supported by an unrestricted
grant from the Corn Refiners As-
sociation, researchers followed 64
overweight and obese people who
were placed on a weight-stable diet
for 10 weeks. The diet incorporated
sucrose-sweetened or high fructose
corn syrup-sweetened low-fat milk,
at 10 percent or 20 percent of total
calories. These fructose consump-
tion levels were two- to four-times
greater than AHA recommenda-
tions.
After 10 weeks, there was no
change in body weight in the group.
There also were no changes in total
cholesterol, triglycerides or “bad”
LDL cholesterol. The participants
also didn’t experience elevated lev-
els of a protein that indicates in-
creased heart disease risk and had
no changes in their levels of “good”
HDL cholesterol.

Take The Bite Out Of Winter Driving

There’s enough not to like about winter without hav-
ing your car break down on the road. Take these steps
while the weather is warmer so your body temperature
doesn’t rise because of car problems when the tempera-
tures drop.
Manual labor
Break out your owner’s manual, grab an iced tea (re-
member, you’re doing this while it’s still warm out) and
find a comfy chair. Now, read your manual and make
sure you’ve been doing all the recommended mainte-
nance to this point. Get the things done that you’ve ne-
glected and make an appointment to have anything done
that’s required in the immediate future. Anything that’s a
problem now (hard starts, stalling, rough idling) can be
exacerbated by hazardous winter conditions.
An ounce of prevention
Do a little investigative snooping under the hood to pre-
vent trouble before it starts. Check your belts and hoses
for wear. Make sure all your fluids are topped off, includ-
ing the all-important windshield washer reservoir. When
was the last time your anti-freeze was changed? If you
don’t know, it may be past time. Don’t forget the battery.
Remove your terminals and use warm water and baking
soda to clean your battery’s posts. There’s nothing worse
than having everything mechanically sound only to find
your vehicle won’t start because the battery is dead.
Wiper not wiping?
It’s a blizzard outside, but you’re warm and toasty in your
smoothly running car. Stay warm by making sure your
windshield wipers are in good shape before the blizzard.
There’s nothing worse-not to mention dangerous-than
having to stop every five minutes, get out of your car and
brush the elements off your windshield because you’re
wipers aren’t working right. Check the rubber and make
sure there are no cracks or worn spots on the blade. Make
sure the blade adheres to the windshield as it moves. If it
doesn’t, you may need to adjust the arm for a more snug
fit. To ensure your wipers aren’t overly taxed when snow
and ice hit, stash a brush and ice scraper in the car to get
as much debris off the windshield as possible before you
begin driving.
Tired tires
The importance of having quality tires to handle whatev-
er road conditions winter may hold can’t be overstated.
Make sure your tread depth is adequate to handle the
conditions for your area. Look at your tires and inspect
them for tread life and uneven wearing. Check for cuts
and nicks. While you’re down there, check each tire’s
air pressure.
Expect the unexpected
You’ve done everything right, but the possibility still ex-
ists you’ll be left stranded some cold winter night. Be
prepared by having some essentials to see you through
until help arrives. Clean the junk out of your trunk and
put in the following: flares, a flashlight, jumper cables, a
shovel, blankets and sand for traction. Have some non-
perishable food in your glove box.
Don’t go
Finally, if the weather is too bad, don’t drive in it. Break
out your favorite magazine or newspaper, grab some hot
chocolate and find a comfy chair. The weather will get
better...eventually.

As much as we’d like to hope, lower gas prices aren’t
likely here to stay. But with prices lower than they
have been in awhile-and especially when they really
start to rise again-here are some tips to help you save
gas.
Gettin’ in tune
Keeping your car in proper running condition is vi-
tal to getting good gas mileage and saving money, so
make sure your engine is tuned up. Especially crucial
under the hood are the spark plugs. Are they firing cor-
rectly? One that isn’t can cost you as much as 30%
in fuel efficiency. All thumbs? You can still replace

gallon on underinflated tires, you can possibly bump
that to 23 with the proper pressure. If your gas tank
holds 15 gallons and you get three extra miles a gallon,
that’s 45 miles per fillup. If you fill up once a week,
that’s 2,340 additional miles a year you’re getting.
