Chapter 6 Section 1 Review

1. Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of all the particles in an object.
2. Thermometers measure temperature through the regular variation of some physical
property of the material inside the thermometer.
3. Thermal Expansion occurs when molecules begin to move faster and they begin to
spread apart.
4. Yes because in the air is a gas which means it has more average kinetic energy.
5. Yes because all objects have some kinetic energy.
6. A sidewalk might be built with periodic breaks in it because the sidewalk expands due
to thermal expansion as the temperature rises.

Chapter 6 Section 2 Review

1. Temperature is a measurement of the average kinetic energy of particles in objects

while Heat is a flow of energy from an object at a higher temperature to an object at a
lower temperature.
2. The units used to measure heat are measurements of energy and the units used to
measure temperature are the measurement of thermal expansion
3. Specific heat is the amount energy required to heat up an object a certain temperature.
4. A calorie and a joule are both are related to the measure of energy.
While a calorie is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of
water by 1 degree Celsius and a joule is the standard scientific unit in which energy is
measured.
5. Temperature is the measurement of the average kinetic energy of particles in an object
and thermal energy is the total random kinetic energy of particles in an object.
6. The water in the pool cool the air near the pool due to water evaporating causing the
air near it to cool.

Chapter 6 Section 3 Review

1. Heat can be transferred through conduction, picking up a hot bowl of soup; t heats you
up. Heat can be transferred through convection, a glass of water; the cold-water sinks and
the hot water rises. Heat can be transferred by radiation; the sun uses waves to hear earth.
2. Convection continues to circulate air through the atmosphere.
3. An insulator is a poor conductor that has high specific heating. This causes it to take
longer to heat up.
4. Conduction, Convection, and Radiation all transfer energy. Conduction does it
through direct contact; convection does it through kinetic energy. Radiation does through
electromagnetic waves.
5. No because they have little kinetic energy in the molecules.
6. It would go from land to water because of convection. The hot air comes from land and
goes to sea were it is colder due to differential heating.
Vocabulary

Kinetic Theory of Matter- all the particles that make up matter are constantly in motion.
Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of all the particles in an object.

Degrees- equally spaced units between two points

Thermometer- measures temperature through the regular variation of some physical

property of the material inside the thermometer.

Heat- the flow of energy from an object at a higher temperature to an object at a lower
temperature.

Thermal energy- the total random kinetic energy of particles in an object.

Calorie- the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1
degree Celsius

Specific Heat- the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a
substance by 1 degree Celsius

Conduction- the process that moves energy from one object to another when they are
touching physically

Conductor- materials that transfer energy easily

Insulators- poor conductors

Convection- the process that transfers energy by the movement of large numbers of
particles in the same direction within a liquid or particles spread out over a larger area.

Radiation- the energy that travels as electromagnetic waves
